D1 men's game last nite. I was not calling, maybe one day! Both teams are in the bonus. A1 is dribbling around a screen. A2 is called for an illegal screen on B1. No free throws are shot. WHy is this?

New rule this year in NCAA. No bonus FTs awarded for a foul committed by a player whose team is in control of the ball.

P.S. -- did you watch the Chevy Chase roast on Comedy Central?

Rule 10-21: No free throws will be awarded to the offended team for a foul committed by a member of the team in control of the ball when the bonus is in effect, as they were previously. Instead, the offended team will be awarded possession at a designated spot (out of bounds). Such a foul will continue to count toward disqualification and toward the team-foul total. This was an experimental rule last year. Under the previous rule, the offended team shot the bonus free throws.

Well I feel smarter for waking up to day!
I am not sure I like that rule (if I was a coacH)
Any rationale for that rule?

To the contrary, why should there be FTs for an illegal screen by A2 but not for a PC foul by A1?

But we could have free throws for both!

I know. I'm not saying that we DO, but that for consistency in the rules that we COULD or perhaps SHOULD.
I agree with JR's post below. I believe we should either shoot on both or shoot on neither. I dislike the way it is under current NFHS rules. Luckily for me the NFHS usually follows the college changes in a couple of years.

To make consistency in the rules. They did not want to have PC fouls the only fouls that did not shoot FTs in this situation. Essentually PC fouls are with some kind of Team Control (for those being picky, not all the time of course) and they wanted the rules to reflect this across the board. It will also speed up the game. I think the change is a good change. A team will have to earn their points, not just get a FT on something that happen on the other end of the court.

Peace
