I was going through some old folders and came across this gem. It was a document our kids rec league used to pass out to coaches and some parents to show them the incorrect interpretations fans have about the rules. Just thought I'd print them here for fun. So, here for your dining and dancing pleasure are the "Fan Rules".
Three second counts continue while shots are being taken. Non-contact situations such as “over the back” and “reaching” are fouls. It is a foul to slap a player’s hand while it is on the ball. Catching your own missed airball shot is traveling. Inbounding from the front court into the backcourt is a violation. There is no backcourt violation if the defense touches the ball at anytime. After a timeout, a team may inbound the ball at midcourt. A ten second backcourt count continues where interrupted following a timeout. Following a score and a timeout, a team has lost the privilege of running the endline. It is a violation to throw a pass to a teammate who is OOB along the endline following a score by the other team. After establishing a pivot foot, lifting the pivot foot is a traveling violation even if the ball is released before the pivot foot returns to the court. When gaining control of a loose ball by diving onto the floor, a player’s momentum of doing so that causes him to roll over or slide is a traveling violation. Stepping on the OOB line while inbounding is a violation. On a spot throw-in, standard traveling restrictions apply. It is permissible for players to wear earrings as long as they are taped over with masking tape. Nothing their kid ever does is a foul.

Basically the opposite of Billy's list...which I fully expect to see him post now.

An important omission from the list.

Huh?
Wait. You mean these are all false? How could that be?

After a timeout, a team most certainly may inbound the ball at the division line! That one is true!

3 second count starts before the team inbounds when the ball is in the frontcourt.

What is 5 second closely guarded? I have a couple of AAU games Friday night, so I need to know these things. You never know, they could be competitive.

As long as there is no reaching.

What is funny to me, is that I found this forum while trying to come up with a way to educate fans and youth level coaches about some of the biggest rule misconceptions. Googling basketball rules etc... I came across a link for a thread from this forum "Most misunderstood rules". I started lurking, then joined, and have been addicted ever since.
More than once I have considered directing certain coaches, fans, and fellow officials to this site so that they may gain a greater understanding of the rules. The only thing preventing me from doing so is the fear of too many "fanboys" and other trouble makers causing a disturbance in here. I had a coach tell me during pregame tonight, that he just recently learned after 12 years as a MS girls HC, that a player can dribble up over their head without violating. I clarified that unless the ball comes to rest it is nothing. It is amazing what rule myths are out there.

Send them over here....they'll either gain some rules knowledge or get smacked down.
