Any of you guys have any documents you use to do your pre-game that you could email me ([email protected])? Also, recomendations on a good pregame board.

Thanks.

Josh

Josh,
Here's one for you to start with:

Here's another link. It's to a thread I posted on this board a while ago.

pre-game board

I got my magnetic board from Honigs.
There's a general pre-game on the back.

How about captain's meeting for college women, what is appropriate, are there any guidelines, I didn't see anything in the CCA manual as far as specifics. Other than the typical introductions, keep your teammates under control, listen to us, etc.

I usually get mine at Hickory Farms. I make sure it has lots of beef sausage, cheddar cheese and crackers. After I eat all the food, I save the board for my favorite game - "Swat the Howler Monkey". I'll be glad to post the game rules and instructions.

Just my advice, and not everybody agrees with me, but forget about "keep your teammates under control, listen to us, etc."

My captain's meeting goes like this: "I'm Mr. Elias, this is Mr. U1, that's Mr. U2. [To visitors]Who's your floor captain? [To home]Who's your floor captain? Ok, shake hands. Have a good game."

My theory, which not everyone agrees with (but which I think is obviously true), is that the captains aren't really listening anyway, they aren't going remember what you say in 30 seconds, and they're certainly not going to tell their teammates what you've just discussed. So keep it to the bare minimum and get the game started.

Exactly. Most anything else that you say is wasted on them anyway.

Check page 11 of the CCA Officiating Manual...bottom of the page, section C is Captains' Meeting..."the meeting will be for introductions, to request the number of the speaking captains, and a brief explanantion of any questions."

OUr pregame card is at http://www.uboa.org look under the forms section... It is in acrobat format. We have used variations like this for years and seems to work.

Boy, ain't it the truth!? Game last night, I was u. Partner gave the whole speech -- "no arm bars, no hand-checking, etc etc" I've never seen so many arm bars in a single game. All five players on one team had an arm up the whole game. We kept calling it and calling it and calling it and it did absolutely no good at all. Do you folks ever talk to coaches about stuff like this? We are told not to, so I didn't but I was sure tempted.

I tried this last night. During the half Mr U1 went to his
bag, took out his schedule, looked at me, looked back at the
schedule and asked "Hey! What happened to Dan?" :p

Captains Meeting

Personally, I don't discuss anything at the captains meeting other than any irregularities with the court. If you stress something, they'll sream during the game "you said..."

I saw a good one at Purchase Officials Supplies. http://www.purchaseofficials.com/index.html. The one on the website has three man coverage.

I have always used the one that I was given by IAABO when I worked in an IAABO state. It has both two and three person coverage and a list of topics you can discuss for pregame. I usually run through the entire list when working with a new official. With an old one, I like to take one of the special topics and talk about one of the topics. Block/Charge, Illegal Screens, etc.

Rainmaker: At the risk of sounding really dumb, I am going to ask you what "arm bars" are. I'm sure we have them in Massachusetts, but I have never heard that term.

By the way, I HATE long speeches at captains' meetings. Like: who has contacts, asthma, inhalers, diabetes?, play the black line all the way around, don't stop if you hear the horn-just the whistle, keep it clean, hands off, no hand-checking or rough play, be sure to get out of the lane before three seconds, no jewelry, hair clips, shirts tucked in, wait for us to beckon subs, have fun, let's have a good game. Any questions, LADIES (or GENTLEMEN)? (another pet peeve)

Players rolling eyeballs to ceiling and yawning. Wake up partner. Toss ball.

Marty,
We have arm bars U.P. here, but mostly in college.

Your "Hated speech" was very well written. :)

Marty, an arm bar is when the defensive player uses the forearm to hold ground (or push against) the offensive post player.

Where are you in MA? I'm near Springfield.

I knew I had seen an arm bar before! We just call it a foul around here. Seriously, I haven't heard any HS refs use that term. I live south of Boston, near Brockton.

Thanks for answering for me, folks. Been a busy day. Everyone around here calls this position an arm bar. Refs are the only ones that call it a foul.

Yeah, yeah. I get it. I'm pretty sure there's a smiley in which a finger plays a prominent role, but since Juulie's reading this thread, I'll refrain!! http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/monkes.gif

Do any of you guys practice this? Why or why not?

Neither do ours, but it's required by the state.

Well, bob, ...I have the intent, but they don't have the spirit. ...And there is no hard penalty.
I don't go beyond asking them is they would like to "join us at the captains' meeting".

My pregame....

I was working rec ball last night, and I told my partner about what I consider the ultimate pregame I've actually used:

Red. White. Be good.

The be good covers the sportsmanship requirement :)

My partner was laughing so hard he almost fell over. Actually, I lied -- I've never used this one, but I told him I did because he spent forever talking about stuff like the "black line all the way around." I just want him to shorten his.

I am working in Monterey, CA for a couple of weeks and decided to watch some of the local schools/officials. Watched a F/JV/V triple last night. Same 2 officials did the F/JV games and in both games, they had the coaches and captains meet with them right in front of the table. Must have been a heck of a meeting because in both games, it took about 4 minutes. Could not believe it. BTW, 1 of the 2 officials was the worst I have ever seen -- absolutely no communication with his partner and no clue as to what signals he was using or decided not to use. This guy called a T with 12 seconds left in the JV game (visiting player slammed the ball down) and as he was walking to the table to report it, he said out loud, "I changed my mind and there is no T", walked back to his position, and put the ball in play. Was talking to the other official before the varsity game and asked him if his partner was brand new. He said no, the guy has been officiating for 5 years!
