My favorite quote/situation came from a summer tournament two years ago. Team is getting beat pretty handily and players and coach are getting frustrated. On a particular play I call a pushing foul on the losing team. During free throws coach flat out asks me: "How much is the other team paying you?" Me: ....WHACK! In retrospect I should of run the coach right then and there. I guess I was just so shocked that the coach would ask such a question. Not 30 seconds later, after being asked to sit due to losing his coaching box, he got whacked again cause he won't comply...goodbye! To top off that game, there were two player T's on the losing team and we had to eject a fan. |
I had a player enter the game as a sub and proceed to get three fouls in a matter of a couple of minutes - he was way out of control.
As I'm reporting foul #3, he goes to his bench and says - "Coach, you need to take me out of the game, I keep having fouls called on me." I walked by and said, "No she doesn't, YOU just need to quit fouling." As I recall he didn't have one called on him the rest of the game....... |
I had one last night that I still can't believe.
5th Grade boys rec league tournament, championship game. Team A is inbounding under their basket, and A1 is wide open under the basket with B1 behind him trying to remember where he's supposed to be. A1 receives the pass and goes up for an open layup, and B1 gives him a 2-handed shove in the back to try to prevent the easy points. Easy call. When B Coaches figures out that I called an intentional, they absolutely can't believe it. Along with the predictable "Seriously?!" and "They're just kids!" the head coach exclaims, "They're only 10! Every foul's intentional!" In my three years reffing, I don't think I've ever heard a dumber remark from a coach. Parent, maybe; coach, no. He even repeated it after the game, disproving my original hypothesis that, in his excitement, he accidentally combined the 4-5 things going through is head into a single statement. My only conclusion is that either he doesn't know what the word intentional means, or he he's convinced himself that every time one of his players has commited a stupid foul, that it was done purposefully to drive the coach crazy. |

26's point is still valid; this kid was behaving like a parent. And you have no idea if he was a parent or not unless you know him personally. |
Mother came onto court during a time out:
"You need to call more time outs. The mascara is running into the the girls' eyes!" And out the door she went. |

And with any luck, while doing so I pissed EVERYBODY off. :D |
