One Commissioner's Evaluation Guidelines ...

On many occasions here on the Forum, threads have been started regarding the qualities of a good basketball official. Well, here's another one for your consideration.

We have a really great assignment commissioner. He observes a junior varsity game, and a varsity game, every night of the season. Last season he only missed one night due to the birth of his grandson. He was a top notch high school official himself, working several state finals, as well as being a pretty good NCAA Division I official, so he knows what he's talking about. His observations, and his evaluations, are very important, because he bases the quality of the assignments our officials get, in some part, on what he observes.

Today, we had our monthly meeting, and he shared with us the five things that he's looking at while observing our games. I tried to write down his guidelines as best I could, and I thought that I would share them with you, especially those who are looking at some type of a self evaluation to try to move up.

Commissioner's Evaluation Guidelines
1) Appearance
2) Mechanics: Official uses proper mechanics. Official uses an assertive voice.
3) Teamwork: Both officials are on the same page.
4) Judgment: Official’s calls are consistent throughout the game.
5) Game Management: Official keeps control of emotions working with table personnel, coaches, players, and fans. Official is polite at all times. Official is slow to anger.
