not hitting the rim

Does anyone call the violation on the first of two free-Throws if the shooter doesn't hit the rim? had a discussion with a few other officials about this the other day. Second Q. do you put your hand up on the first shot of two as center( 3 crew ) trail ( 2 crew ) or just the last one. thanks.

First of two and the shooter misses the rim? I wouldn't say anything unless for some other reason, the defense violated just so coaches know why the shooter isn't getting a replacement free throw.

Also, there's no point in raising your hand on the first of two free throws. The point of raising our hand is to chop time in on a potential miss. If there's no chance the ball will remain live on a miss, then there's no reason to raise your hand.

Just so when you do call a violation for the free throw missing the rim you're not the L (unless your partner at T or C brainfarts and misses the obvious miss, of course) and you don't do that upward finger "swirling the toilet bowl" signal. No sense being a plumber about it. Oops, just dissed myself.
Just point to the rim with the other hand upraised with an open hand and then point to where the throwin will be administered.
"Swirling the toilet bowl" isn't a mechanic. It is, however, a signal I use right after solving a stubborn toilet clog. It's in our company's mechanics manual.

How do you reset the shot clock?

Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. Fri Jan 21, 2011 02:58pm

If the only thing that happened during the first of two or the first two of three free throws is that the attempt did not make contact with the basket ring, just let it go. Everybody knows the shot was missed and the player is no doubt is embarassed by his poor attempt.

We don't have a shot clock here across the lake from Rut. Is there a special mechanic for resetting the shot clock for those states who do have one? Maybe that's where it came from.

I believe the signal he's referring to is the basket interference signal for the NBA rather than the swirl with the index finger point towards the ceiling.

What is the call if its the 2nd shot and misses rim and backboard?

That would be a violation if it misses the rim. It makes no difference whether it hits the backboard or not. Wouldn't you agree?

Is it the (a) second shot of a one-and-one, (b) second shot of two, or (c) second shot of three?

What difference would it make?

They're all covered under the same rule, aren't they?
