Just the other night we had a small meeting with a bunch of officials, we got to talking about some rules for a local park league. To make a long story short, one official was pretty darn sure there was a rule in the NFHS rule book 'that if a team substituted 4 or more players at one time the opposing coach could call for a "match up" to allow defensive team to get matched up with their assignments'. So far a couple of us have not been able to come up with the "rule" in the NFHS books.
Any help in locating this one?

This opportunity has been in the rules for quite some time.
It's called a TIME OUT. If he wants to take the TIME OUT to do a match up, that's his right. Otherwise, play on!
However, if you are setting your own rules for a park league, you can institute any variations that you all want (and can agree on). I like the one where the coach gets permanently ejected from the league for the rest of the season if he gets his second T (in that season, not just one game).

Actually this used to be a valid rule. It has not been nor has ever been retracted out of the rules book. It just dissapeared one year. I have never seen them actually change the rule. Would I allow it is another story.

Let um' match

Will it make the game better if they get to match up?
Probably...you won't have a bunch of players running around trying to find an opponent to guard.
I'd just take a little extra time on the throw in to let them get a "partner". The coaches would appreciate the "game management" and you wouldn't look overbearing.

P.S. Golf dude...you can use the damn edit key without doing another post! ;)

Right.

In the 1998-1999 book, 3-3-2 Question:"Following substitutions, should the official line up the players to aid them in locating opponents? Answer -- This shall be done at the request of a captain when three or more substitutes for the same team enter during an opportunity to substitute."

The Q&A did not appear in the 1999-2000 book. No explanation for their disappearance was given.

I know that you said High School Federation but just to throw it out there.
This rule is in the NCAA rules book. Rule 3. Art.15 states... When 3 or more substitutes for the same team enter the game, an official may honor a request by the opposing team to aid it in locating the entering players.

Funny how this is being talked about in the Forum as I was just asked this same question by a Div-2 coach earlier this week. I thought she was crazy; but I will never doubt her again.

Bobby, unless you're married to her, I think you're going a little too far. Chances are, you'll still be right a lot more often than she will.

If a man speaks and there is no woman present, is he still wrong?

Doesn't matter, there's still a list of stuff to get done...
