A player saved the ball under the opponents basket, returned to the court and gained possesssion of the ball. Legal or not?

Legal all the way if the player was in bounds when they gained possession. This is not football where certain players cannot be the first to touch the ball in some situations.

I'll try to make it more interesting. :-) If the player was dribbling the ball and stepped out of bounds (while the ball stayed inbounds) and then returned and was the first one to touch the ball, that would be a violation. Otherwise, legal.

A dribble is considered the same thing as holding the ball. So if they touch the ball without touching the ball, that is still a violation.

See 7-1-1.

Replace dribble the ball without touching the ball, it is a violation.

Had this very situation except it occurred on the sideline. I called a violation. Is there a rule I could reference on this situation. I looked but could not find one. Maybe the absence of the rule is the point.

According to the 2002-2003 Simplified and Illustrated Rulebook, they have a picture that discribes this very play. They reference 7-1-1 and 4-15-5.

Actually 4-15-1 is a better interpretation. But if you read all of 4-15 it might help on the interpretation.

I'm glad to see you back!! And with your signature expressing your opinion, even though there was some controversy before. Your modification is a good one and should make it more acceptable, I hope (although I didn't have a problem with the original--signature lines are for opinions, and personal disclosure). Hope you'll stick around through the season. What kind of schedule are you expecting?

This is my third season and by far the busiest. I have close to thirty dats on the calandar. All but three are Freshman/JV games. The church is growing as well so its been busy all around.

I'm going to try and get in on some 3-man clinics this year and maybe get a varsity game or two next season. There is a big National Christian School Tournament in Kansas City each year. I spoke to the official who does all of the assigning for this event. I doubt if I'll get in for a few more years but at least he has my name.

It is good to back. I learned so much from this forum last season. I'm sure that will be the case again this year.

I found it in the book. Thank you. What troubles me is my veteran partner (7th season) told me I made the right call.
