Pregnant wife (ref) when woud you stop?

My friend’s wife will be pregnant in her 8th month when our state playoffs start; he is also a referee and works with her. When, if at all would you make her stop working games. Way too many things can happen that our out of her control that could cause an injury to her unborn child. Not to mention our state contracts state we should be in 100% physical condition or we shouldn't work. Thoughts?

I would MYOB. This is their decision.

It's Not BillieMac ...

If I find out that I'm pregnant, I will stop officiating immediately, and join the circus.

cmhjordan23 Wed Jan 12, 2011 01:47pm

I think that's probably a question for the doctor. And mother has to listen to her body. In my opionion, probably 5 months. By 6 months your really showing and the fans will see the reason she might be a little slow on her feet. Don't need to give them any reason to question the officials ability.

Your friend is married to a woman, correct?

I can "trick" mine into doing things but "make" her is out of the question. IJS

They question is when would you make your wife stop in the same situation.

Last time I checked the baby is both our yours. :)

Rich Wed Jan 12, 2011 02:00pm

Female? Wisconsin? I'll look for her on TV.

I tried telling my wife not to mow the lawn when she was pregnant. Let's just say that didn't go over very well. And then her doc got in on the act and told me it was good exercise for her. I've mowed the lawn twice in the past 5 years and was told how terrible of a job I do. :D

Maybe after the child is born, but until then? The laws are pretty clear on that subject.

That is a topic for another day....the risks strongly outweigh working the games.

That's between her and her doctor. Like my wife's doctor told me, exercise (even running) is good for most women even later on in pregnancy.

Are you an OBG? I've got a coworker (Army Guard) who kept running at the gym into her 8th month.

The risk being knocked over...ball hitting you...running into or falling over a coach (that is kneeling). This is not walking around the track at the gym or taking a walk in the park.

My guess is she's in better condition, even pregnant, than half of your officials over 60. And I wouldn't even consider trying to "make her" do anything, even if I was her husband.

Are you going to suggest she stop driving? More people get injured every day driving to work than reffing a basketball game.

My advice, stay out of it.

There's a risk / reward tradeoff in everything we do. Different people evaluate the two sides differently.

For YOU, the risks aren't worth the rewards. For HER, they seem to be. It's her (or their) decision. When you (or your wife / girlfriend / ...) get pregnant, you can make a different decision.

Actually, no, that wasn't the question. You asked,

"My friend’s wife will be pregnant in her 8th month when our state playoffs start; he is also a referee and works with her. When, if at all would you make her stop working games?"

My wife would never officiate. It would get her hair messy.

That's an old trick. I did it with ironing. Do a horrible job. Never have to do it again. Husbands of the world, unite.

Also, I used to tell my kids that they could only help me with snowshovelling if they were good. Tom Sawyer revisited.

Hmmmmm - hormones, pregnant wife, 8th month, me TELLING her anything ......

Nope - not gonna happen!! I value my own life. :D

Adam Wed Jan 12, 2011 02:54pm

I've rethought this. Since the little lady will be done reffing after she has a baby, I'd let her enjoy her little hobby as long as possible before the baby is born.

Hmmm, wouldn't there be a greater chance of getting whacked from an official that's eight months pregnant?

Do you shovel snow badly, too?

I don't shovel. I use a snowblower. And yes, she comes home from work and says it's not good enough and goes out and cleans up after me. :)

I will have to try that with dishwashing....
btw in case there is a lurker from western MA, you should explain what a snow blower is.

Then we wouldn't be entertained by reports of "shoveling."

Yeah, that would be a huge loss.

This must be the crew I saw do a girls game a week or so ago, she must have been 5 or 6 months along. She did a real nice job, I would say she should keep working until SHE decides it is time.

To Mom to be:

Are you in Sansabelt or Smitty? I know we previously got everyone's opinions, but this does bring up a new twist. Can't imagine what some fans are a hollerin! Eight months, wow, you go girl. I applaud you for trying to keep your schedule going but for the baby's sake, maybe take it easy here soon. The very best of luck to you.

Ouch, burned my lip. Maybe I'll go shovel some more before it gets dark.

You may want to change if your clothes are all sweaty.

And that reminds me of another beautiful Christmas Story

Here's one you can sing to your kids next Christmas...

You'd better watch out
You'd better not cry
You'd better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is dead.
