Had A First Tonight

Home team wins by two, but wait, before I could get off the end line to head to the locker room. Home team player two hand shoves opponent in the chest. Technical foul and visitors make both to take it to OT. Kids second tech and fifth foul so he doesn't see OT. Coach sits as it is an indirect on him. Has any one ever had this situation or even seen it? Hope I never do again.

Wow... I don't think I've even heard of that situation!

Did you think of possibly a flagrant T?

With a flagrant T, that kid now cannot participate in the OT, regardless of the previous 4 fouls, or previous T.

Wow. Don't tell Padgett, he'll stroke out.

Adam Thu Dec 23, 2010 08:35am

Good call. Did visitors win the game in OT?

Was a long explanation required for the home coach to understand what was going on?

Ed Maeder Thu Dec 23, 2010 04:24pm

Visitors still ended up losing. Coach did want an explanation and of course he had never heard of that before. The player could not participate because of the five fouls or the two techs so flagrant did cross my mind but would have been redundant. The team was up from Colorado so they probable felt that they already had been homered.

Holiday tournament, then? Where was the game played? (Just the state, don't need particulars.) Inter-state participation isn't as common here as it once was, I've found.

A question for all:
Usually, if someone comes off the bench when there a fight, it's a flagrant technical, whether they participate in the fight or not. What about Ed's situation? We don't penalize anyone for coming off the bench at the final horn, but what if there's a scuffle going on? Do we still penalize as usual, because the game is still in doubt, and free throws are still to be taken?

Flagrant T for fighting any time.

No, the players are coming off to celebrate what they think is a win. The time has expired, they have a legitimate reason to be on the court, so you can't penalize them for simply leaving the bench.

We had a team from California, Oregon, and Colorado. The tournament was in Alaska.

I don't know about Alaska, but in VT a flagrant for fighting results in a well deserved 2 game suspension.

Game Suspension ???

One game here in the Land of Steady Habits.

In the Green Mountain State, does the interscholastic sports governing body differentiate between fighting flagrant fouls, and other types of flagrant fouls?

And how would VT enforce that if the team was from California, Oregon, or Colorado?

It would depend on whether the player fought extradition.
