So, in the case of the ball up top, the T has the patchup. If B knocks the ball to L's sideline, we know that the L takes the call. He thought that because the T had the matchup, that the T takes the OB call.

His thinking caught me off-guard, and also reminded me that they don't know about our mechanics, etc. But his logic was sound/reasonable for someone who didn't pay attention much to mechanics.

If I can, I'll avoid a T if it's reasonable that the coach doesn't know our mechanics. Then, get the ball inbounds quickly...

In a normal circumstance, I would agree with this approach. Perhaps I was reading more into it, but he said the coach was still angry about the no-call; so I took the response as sarcastic and T-worthy.

While I get what you're saying...the coach's ignorance is his problem, not ours. If his behavior is out of line, ignorance notwithstanding, it needs to be addressed.

Right, and I have no problem with a coach asking questions out of legitimate ignorance.

However, when his ignorance is combined with anger and sarcasm....
No.

When a coach does not know when to pick their spots, either ignore them or address their behavior.

All these lines are great and work well I am sure for the officials that use them, but I have found that most of them do not work universally. Work within your personality. If being a hard *** works use that. If being a soft spoken guy works, use that. If saying nothing works, use that. All situations are not the same and all coaches will not respond the same. And some of this only works because you have a reputation that a coach will respect. Nothing works all the time or some of the time. It is something you will constantly have to work on and figure out what works for you.

Peace
