Interesting that they would choose to mark the area with an arc when the rules define the area as a rectangle.

So I'm guessing that there's no more arc for the rest of the season?

I don't know why this was experimental. If you're going to mark an area where someone can't be, it would be helpful for both players and officials to have it marked clearly. What's the rationale for not having it marked? :confused:

Many (most?) years have "experimental" rules that are used during the early-season tournaments. The rules committee is unsure how the change will affect the game, or whether the rule needs to be "tweaked."

I guess my point is why does the committee need this tested out? If you have an area where something can't happen, then mark it off. I don't see the negatives, and it can only help with the consistency of this call.

But what do I know? I'm just a lowly high school official lol :D

The interesting thing is that arc doesn't actually outline what the rules define as "directly under the basket". In the rules, the "restricted area" is an 18"x24" rectangle. It's not an arc at all. So if they decide to go ahead and mark the floor (which I hope they do), they either have to change the marking or change the rulebook. My guess is they'll do the latter.

And this exact point was made by BITS 4 days ago. Sigh. Guess I should read the whole thread before responding.
