Former SEC Supervisor John Guthrie

Former SEC Supervisor of Officials John Guthrie died a couple weeks ago at the age of 70. I found out quite by accident, through a linked article to something else I was reading. Here's the link I found.

I'm saddened by this because I liked Coach Guthrie very much after meeting him at Ronnie Nunn's camp several years ago.

Just thought I'd pass along the news.

That is too bad. Prayers go out with his family and those that knew him.

Peace

Memories

I still remember him as a genuine southern gentleman from his early days as an asst coach at GWU. My older brothers always said they would have quit were it not for his kindly nature balancing the nastiness of the head coach. Coincidentally, I think Ronnie Nunn was on that team also.
Never realized GWU had such a prolific impact on the world of officiating with those two.
Regards to his family...

Yeah ... saw this a few weeks ago. His IIOC camp was the very first "big time" camp that I attended -- think about 13 or so years ago! We would start around 8am and go all day with classroom, then a bunch of games, then more classroom ... normally ending at midnight or later.

And heaven help you if you yawned during his lecture!! I know that I got called out once as did many others! I think he loved messing with you just to see how you would react!

Many NBA officials came out of that camp -- Eli Roe was one that I remember -- and I'm sure there were others.

Ive never met him but just about every camp Ive been to has been littered with Coach Guthrie trained clinicians. People don't really know how huge of an impact he had on basketball officiating east of the Mississippi.
