Reflections on the past week men's rec tourney
1. No concept/interest in time/being on time. Several teams very late, and a couple of forfeits. Young men have too many other ways to occupy their time.
2. Most traveling violations (and there were many) are met by looks of utter disbelief by the traveler and his teammates, while the opponents all make the travel signal in unison. 3. All drives to the hoop, if there is any defender in the vicinity, are accompanied by shouts of "And one!" 4. All blocking fouls are followed by comments to the effect: "He's pushing off, ref." or "Watch that elbow, ref. 5. When in doubt, most guys shoot a 3, some of them really deep. When not in doubt, some guys shoot even more 3's. 6. Some of the greatest dunks I've even seen in person, the kind that would have been worthy of Vince Carter in his prime. Also, the lights in this gym are recessed in the ceiling, and a couple go on and off intermittently. One, right in the center of the gym, would flash on and off when a dunk shook the building. And if it was off at the time of the dunk, it would flash red at first, and then stay on white. Overall, the quality was high and the behavior was good. I still actually enjoy these tourneys most of the time.
