Parent Rules

As we all know, parents are experts when it comes to rules. As proof, here's my list of "Parent Rules".

Three second counts continue while shots are being taken.

Non-contact situations such as “over the back” and “reaching” are fouls.

It is a foul to slap a player’s hand while it is on the ball.

Catching your own missed airball shot is traveling.

Inbounding from the front court into the backcourt is a violation.

There is no backcourt violation if the defense touches the ball at anytime.

After a timeout, a team may inbound the ball at midcourt.

A ten second backcourt count continues where interrupted following a timeout.

Following a score and a timeout, a team has lost the privilege of running the endline.

It is a violation to throw a pass to a teammate who is OOB along the endline following a score by the other team.

After establishing a pivot foot, lifting the pivot foot is a traveling violation even if the ball is released before the pivot foot returns to the court.

When gaining control of a loose ball by diving onto the floor, a player’s momentum of doing so that causes him to roll over or slide is a traveling violation.

Stepping on the OOB line while inbounding is a violation.

It is permissible for players to wear earrings as long as they are taped over with masking tape.

Nothing their kid ever does is a foul.

Forgot one...

While taking the ball out for a spot throw in, player can not move at all. And if they do, it is a travel.

When the head coach is sitting, the assistant can stand.

A five second closely guarded count is terminated when the dribbler simply takes two steps forward to "advance the ball"

I enjoy the "spirit of the rules" comments just as much:

Parent says: "Call it both ways." Parent means: "Call it for our team."
Contact on parents team: "That's a foul!" Contact by parents team: "We barely touched them!"

And my all time favorite comment and a bit of a rant, actually heard after a youth football game: "I don't know why we play every week, all the refs do is cheat us, every game." I don't know about you but all I have to do in my life is to figure out how to "cheat" 10 year old kids!

One more, The foul count must be identical for both teams!

Anytime a fan/parent yells one of the violations/infractions mentioned, the officials will immediately blow their whistle, stop play, and call the violation/infraction that is yelled the loudest and/or most often.

I anticipate each B10U game will take approximately 107 minutes!

I heard one of the best lines yet over this past weekend:

Boys 10 yr old Biddy District Tournament

Close game between the two best teams in the district.

A1 is dribbling in the front court when B1 gets around him and steals the ball and starts on a fast break the other way. I'm new L running along the side of the stands and I hear this wonderful comment:

"C'mon, ref! You can't let him steal the ball like that!"

I almost starting crying i was laughing so hard.(on the inside of course)

How foolish of me to let that go and not call a "foul"!

Headbands can be any color of the rainbow, as long as the players on the same team are all wearing the same color headband.

Touching the ring, or the net, while the ball is above the ring, in the cylinder, is basket interference, or worse, it’s goaltending.

Slapping the backboard during a try is goaltending and the basket is awarded.

The top of the backboard is out of bounds.

A player who is fumbling the ball is traveling.

A player who dribbles the ball above his head is palming, or carrying, the ball.

If a player's momentum carries him or her off the court, he cannot be the first player to touch the ball after returning inbounds, if he does so, he is out of bounds.

No matter where the backcourt violation occurs, the ball is always awarded to the other team at the division line.

A moving screen, without contact, is always a foul.

A defensive player has to remain perfectly stationary to take a charge.

There is a three-second count while the ball is in the backcourt.

For free throws when there are no rebounders in the marked lane spaces, i.e. technical fouls, the nine nonshooters shall remain behind the division line.

It is not any type of infraction for a player to excessively swing his arms or elbows without contacting an opponent.

It’s always a kicking violation if the ball strikes any part of the leg or foot.

If I recall correctly, there was a question in regard to this rule on my NFHS questionnaire a few weeks ago. It may be a real rule next year.

If someone bringing the ball up does not fully enter the forecourt i.e. only one foot and/or the ball and then brings that foot and/or ball into the backcourt, it is a violation.

That is also one of my "favorites". How about the one where the parents scream for a kicked ball on an offensive player after fumbling the ball? I hear this more and more lately.
