Usurpation
So I'm reffing my kid's game. I know, I know, but it's 5/6 grade and they need volunteers, and it's good exercise. My kid is, well, let's charitably say not very good. But they were up by 15 or so and coach put him in for the last few minutes. He sets up camp under the basket, even when the other team has the ball. Other team misses a shot, my kids team rebounds and makes a long pass to my kid to get one good shot. Hot shot teammate (who has no clue) is racing madly downcourrt, looking back over his shoulder, doesn't see my kid, intercepts the pass and makes a shot.
I was busily writing rule 11-5-4a: Players shall not usurp the ball, in any manner that displays his or her own skills at the expense of a less capable teammate. Penalty: Sitting the bench for the rest of the quarter. He didn't even travel or anything. Jerk...

Wow, Usurpation-great word. Now I can tell a coach who questions a foul, "Your player usurped the ability of the opposing player to score." That will shut the coach up for sure.

"Pass it to Mason!!" Yea, the bench was, but he wasn't listening. He's one of Mason's closest friends, but he's a ball-hog. His dad was sitting next to Mason's dad (my husband). I'm sure the dad will have a word or two.
