OT - Case for the 12 Foot Basket

Since the season is winding down and there seems to be fewer posts.......

SI Vault - 1967 Article on raising the baskets to 12 Feet. Arguments been made before. Still hold today?

A bit long, but a good read IMO with dates and names some may find interesting.

Raised baskets in Tennessee test game made rebounding - 12.04.67 - SI Vault

And yes, it does reference Mr. Naismith and peach baskets!

Without reading the article, I remember it. Not sure if it was when Boerwinkle was playing in college or not. Kind of funky cover as I remember it. 10 feet was plenty high for me as a 10 year old.

On the other side of the argument, I saw on ESPN the other day that the average dunks per game in the NBA (not that I have watched a game in the last 10 years) is like 6 or something. I think 10 feet is fine.

I remember reading that article as a 5'-09" junior guard in H.S. on a varsity basketball team that had six players between 6'-04" and 6'-09" on the team.

As I re-read the article a wave of nostalgia came over me to read the names of all of the college coaches of the past.

Okay, back to the present. I truely believe that eventually that the basket will have to be raised to eleven (11) feet for the NBA and FIBA (Men's Olympics and Men's World Championships) first. But it will not be in my lifetime. Eventually, it will be raised for both men's and women's competition at all levels. It will eventually for all age groups.

That would absolutely ruin that scene in Hoosiers.

Many years ago, didn't MTV air some type of celebrity basketball game with different height baskets being worth different number of points.

No, but that Dire Straits video looks like it has similar characters to the SI cover. There was some game with trampoline like flooring that had some different oint values depending on the typ of basket scored, though.

They did. I don't remember what it was called but they would unveil the 25- or 50-point basket occasionally to get the games closer

26 Year Gap, the type of basketball you're talking about is called Slam Ball. It was being shown on either Versus or Spike TV. I hadn't heard anything more about though.

That would be the Rock N Jock B-Ball Jam. I believe they also started the games with a kick off didn't they?

I'd love to see Padgett work one of those games. Not sure who his partners would be though.

It would vault the movie to a special class of classic designation... from a time where the baskets used to be 10' from the ground. Think of the $2 USD bill...

Today, there is a common misconception that the $2 bill is no longer in circulation. According to the Treasury, they "receive many letters asking why the $2 bill is no longer in circulation". In response, the Treasury states: "The $2 bill remains one of our circulating currency denominations. Some strip clubs will hand out $2 bills as change and for tips instead of singles to increase the amount given to dancers, and will only hand out singles when they are specifically requested. Some casinos also have $2 poker tables where $2 bills are used instead of poker chips.

In the off season I make a little extra on the side by stripping. You guys know me as BillyMac. The customers, for some reason, call me Big Mac. I really don't know why those girls gave me that nickname?
