Worked with a "lurker"
Last night, rec game. Partner tells me he monitors this board regularly, but doesn't post. Says he enjoys my "one liners" (Oh - so he's the one).
After the game, some parent from the losing team (of course) who was yelling at us the entire game walks by and says, "You guys ought to be ashamed of yourselves". I reply, "Coming from a real expert like you, that means a lot". I said to my partner, "Did you hear what he said?" He said yeah. I then said, "And did you hear what I said back?" He said, "Yeah, I guess you really say that". Of course I do. DUH!

Speaking of one liners, I liked your signature line so much (about cars and buses) that I posted it for awhile as my profile line on my Facebook account. It was AMAZING how many people commented by saying, "I don't get it." (I think they may have been of the fairer-hair variety.)

C'mon Mark...do you really let PARENTS yell at you the enitre game?
I'm sure you have some of your classic one liners ready for the parents who do yell. The reason I am asking is...I did one of the few AAU games, the other day, that I have ever done. I found myself not willing to take any garbage from anyone...I was having fun, and I wasn't going to let any parent or coach ruin it for me or any of the players for that matter. One parent yelled something and I almost kicked him out of the gym...whew...that's probably why I don't do AAU.

BTW - I have another game with this same ref next week. I wonder if he'll have any more comments for me about this board.

I usually ignore parents. Although I have been known to tell a parent near the court who is complaining, "You aren't allowed to yell at the refs until you learn the rules." Usually illicits a laugh at the yeller's expense.

I'm not sure how officials that engage fans, much less entertain the notion, expect to enjoy a reputation for staying out of trouble and being professional.
Keep in mind, you never know who's listening to you when you speak. So, be careful. It only takes a moment in time to trash a reputation it took a lot of effort to build with your peers, coaches and assignor. |

That borders on the illegal.
