League Commissioner is All Up In Our Grill
7th grade boy's rec tonight, third of my three games. The first two went off without a hitch.
It's red vs blue in the third game. The wife of red's coach is the league commissioner. She's also doing the book for this particular game. During the first half, when I called a foul on red, and went to report, she gave me a look that screamed "Wow I think that was a sh***y call." This is the league commissioner, keep in mind. At the half, my partner and I walk to the table to switch the arrow, and Mrs. Commissioner wants to have a word with us. She thinks we're not calling enough travel violations. She essentially accuses us of not calling anything so we can get the heck out of there. Truthfully, there was one travel that I called, and that's all I saw. She threatened several times to have us barred from working this league again. My partner took care of telling her that when she's at the table, she's part of the officiating crew, and that she can't be questioning our judgement speech. We did call more travels in the second half, but it was because there were more. I'm definitely emailing my assignor about the incident so he can hear our side before she gets to email him. |
Good idea emailing your assigner on this one. I wouldn't have hesitated to replace her for her little half-time tirade.

Not during the game. Man, the arrogance on this board almost makes it not worth responding, but just reading.

Not during the game.
Come off your horse. |

Possibly like Snaqs, I interpreted the post to read, that the scorer/Commissioner was giving the crew "some looks" and then at halftime had some words with the crew. I didn't see anywhere where there was yelling or a scene of any kind.
I saw no where to indicate anything occurring "after" the game and didn't read the walkout suggestion that way. That being the case, to leave at half-time, IMO, would have been wrong. |
can you give me that link to your ref blog one more time, didn't quite get that enough times:rolleyes:

I would have walked off during the game. This is not what I have any desire to do and if I am working it is only for the money, not for the enjoyment. I would have walked off if a TD during a rec league treated me that way. Let her officiate.

I actually did that during an MAYB tournament a few years ago It was early into the afternoon on Saturday when the wife of the tournament director decided to come onto the court during a timeout and get in the face of my partner because he warned a coach. This said partner is notorious for having very thin skin and a quick trigger, especially in MAYB tournaments, but to this point, had done a very good job. So I went over there and told the lady that she needed to get off the court, NOW, and that if I saw her anywhere near the court again she would be ejected from the gym. (at this time I did not realize who it was, I wasn't informed until later.) After the game was over, TD comes storming into the locker room, gets in my partners face and tells him that he is done. As I start to talk and explain the situation, he then gets in my face and tells me to shut up and wait my turn. At this point I had had enough of this guy, so I asked everyone on my crew (it was a 4 person crew, we ran 3 person, 3 games on, 1 off) to pack up their stuff and we were leaving. So we left the gym with the TD red faced, knowing he had just screwed up and now he was short a crew for the rest of the tournament.
My opinion, rec ball, Biddy ball, MAYB, or anything else that you might have in the summer, does not pay enough to put up with BS like this. I have never worked an MAYB tournament since and never plan to again. |
