Eighth year doing this, I'd never had IT.

Last night, competitive girls conference game. Great partner with similar experience. Game had some tough calls, we were on top of them and calling a great, if difficult and sloppy, game.

Then IT happened.

Gym is extremely loud. Girl drives from out top into the lane, gets the ball up, then there's a crash, ball goes through the basket.

IT happens.

We end up counting the bucket, the point guard fouls out, B puts ball in play with endline throw-in.

Sigh...

At least we administered it correctly.

I hope it's at least 8 more years before IT happens again.

A descriptive attempt at explaining would be nice.

Is this where you have a double whistle and one official calls BLOCK and the other CHARGE?

If you are referring to a blarge then you are correct.

Come on...talking about it will help. (or not)

Who called what? And how did you decide which call to go with? (Pretty sure I know the answer to that one.)

As far as deciding which call to go with, there is no decision to make. If one official calls a block and the other a charge, by rule you have a double foul.

And that's what we had. Ugh. And I should have yielded.

We figured out afterwards that we must have whistled at exactly the same time and neither of us heard the other. I didn't see him until I was done selling a block, and he didn't see me at all until I walked toward him and said "we've got an issue."

Coaches were frustrated, fans were confused, etc.

I'm frustrated for two reasons - one, I'm BIG on communication and handling double-whistles appropriately. I was T, this was in the middle of the lane going away from me. I should have expected him to come with a call. Secondly, it really put a "mark" on a tough game that we otherwise handled very well.

Good learning experience - don't let the emotion of the game and the desire to 'sell' a call speed you up.

It was also the last game of the season for me. I may be able to pick up a make-up game next week...and I hope so because I don't want to end the season with that one!

But wouldn't a double foul have resulted in the basket NOT counting?

Nope. Because the ball was away when the foul happened, and by definition a double foul is NOT a player control foul, the ball remained live and the shot counted.

We reported the double foul, explained to the coaches, waited for the point guard (who scored the bucket but earned her 5th) to be replaced, and then put the ball back in play at the POI, which was the throw-in after the made basket.

Am I correct in assuming that had the shot been unsuccessful you would have gone to the arrow to determine possession?
