both jv and varsity?

Can a player participate in both the jv and the varsity contest when one game is followed by the other the same evening?
Penalty?

Not your issue as an official (unless your state says so). This is strictly a local/state/conference/association issue; this has nothing to do with officials at all. This is an administrative rule only, not a playing rule. Ask the people in your area, none of us would know for sure.

Peace

Not in California

In California this is a huge no-no that is punishable by a forefeit of said contests!

Depends on the state. In Alaska they can participate in both but they can only play for a total of 6 quarters a night.

No restriction of any kind here. Did a 3A (middle classification) soph./jv double-header last night. Soph. and JV teams were nearly identical. Some of the same kids started both games and played major minutes. If the V game had been a blowout, some of those same kids would have gotten minutes in the V game too.

Pennslyvania has a 6 quarter rule for junior high but nothing for JV Varsity. We b team jh game a team jr high game jv game and varsity game all in the same gym back to back to back to back same night.

Missouri lets kids play 5 quarters a day.

(I assume overtime does not count in these counts though?)

This is a question that ALWAYS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO YOUR LOCAL ASSOCIATION OR STATE ORGANIZATION. There is no NFHS rule regarding this.

You can have as many different answers as there as conferences in this country.

In our conference in Wisconsin a player is allowed 4 quarters per night. If they play both JV and Varsity they will save 1 quarter for Varsity.

However - schools with extremely low ennrollements can petition the state and get a waiver for extra quarters for players. This waiver is written from the state and the coach must show it to opposition. We, as officials, have nothing to do with this.

90 quarters a season. 5 quarters a day is the only limitation in Ohio. But, not our job to enforce, although I have heard officials say they would T up the coach if violated.

The 90 quarter limitation is difficult to police. But 5 quarters per day is not: just check the book(s).

BTW Ignats, it IS our job to enforce this restriction. The OHSAA manual specifies the penalty for violating the 5 quarter restriction: "If a player violates this rule, the team shall be assessed a technical foul by the official and the player shall be disqualified from the game."

Punctuation errors in the original.
