What if it is a medical/compression sleeve like the one you see Allen Iverson wear, in a HS game? What is the statndard practice? Does the player or coach have to provide some type of proof (ie, a note from a doctor) that it is medically necessary?

This varies on the state. Some states require a doctor note, others consider the player's word to be sufficient. Check local listings.

I was taught to ask the player, "Are you wearing that for medical reasons?" If they say yes, they wear it. No, they take it off if they want to play.

I've only come across one player who wears it for legitimate medical reasons, and he has an additional elbow pad due to a previous fall. All the others I have questioned have taken it off. We were told not to press the issue.

The standard practice (according to the rules makers) is to assume it is for medical purposes. And you never have to ask and there is no verification needed either verbally or anything written. Some officials seem to obsess over getting some verification, but the rules do not require this and the NF said if there was a requirement then the rules would indicate such.

Peace

While I agree w/ JRut, do check your local listings. My state has indicated a note from a doctor must be presented to allow the sleeves.

Don't like it, but that's the way our state wants it.
