F-I-F-T-Y fouls

Ugh. I need to throw my whistle in the fireplace.

Some joker near the one endline was yelling how "inconsistent" we were. Inconsistent? We called a freaking foul just about every time down the floor!

One to forget. We tried to GIGDGO, but the game took 1:50 anyway.

I had a bad game(officiating) tonight, too tired and not focused, very disappointing. Nothing to discuss, another game tomorrow night.

BV last night, we had a real bad chirper behind the V bench. Yak, Yak, Yak. Nice sportsmanship example he set for the players. His team won by 12 and he had something to say on almost every play.......sad.

Ours was a piece of work. One line: "I refereed for 20 years and you two are the worst I've ever seen."

No, sir, you aren't and never were an official, cause if you were you'd (1) never yell at the officials and (2) would recognize how awful the game in front of you was.

It's my kid's 5th birthday today. I really, really wish I would've found a sub for tonight. I took the game in a flurry of assigning and didn't put the date with the significance at the time and as busy as I've been I didn't take the time to get a sub. Now instead of taking my kid to dinner, I'll be working. At least it's a night game and I don't have to leave until late.

That one would be over my personal line in the sand. Wack without warning if it was said to me.

It was an idiot in the stands. I had my back to him, trying not to LOL. I would've whacked a coach on that in a heartbeat.

I was kinda wondering....:)

It ain't like you to put up with crap like that from any coach. You won't hesitate to take care of bidness if you have to.

Meanwhile, back at the fan's bedroom closet, hangs his byron collared shirt, his metal whistle [on a red lanyard], and his bell-bottomed referee pants.

It just must have been a bad night to officiate, as I had the same problem...

Hey, it's my birthday today too! And instead of enjoying dinner with my family I'll be working a night game as well... :( Oh well, there's always next year...

Giving grammar lessons, I presume.

The stars must have been aligned just right last night or something as I, too, had one of those games. It started out at the opening tip...team goes the worng direction and gets fouled while "shooting" at oppoents basket. Coach had a hard time grasping why we didn't award free throws. A total of six players fouled out...both teams were in double bonus with eleven minutes remaining in the second half (18 minutes halves in Minnesota). Game started at 7:20 and we walked off the court at 9:00 even though we had running time for the past seven minutes. :(

JR, I'll be the first to admit that I try to avoid getting involved in crowd/fan behavior and need to engage better when necessary. I was the junior partner. My P's and I talked about it at half-time and we all passed on it. Live and learn.

Judtech Sat Jan 16, 2010 02:13pm

I feel your pain.

I am not sure of the exact number of fouls called, but if the assistant coach is to be believed we had 39 on one team. Since BOTH teams were in the double bonus we can say the other team had AT LEAST 20 for a total of 59 fouls. (Plus 2 T's, One ofr scorebook and one for delay of game jumping over the line....twice) I didn't have the heart to look at the paper but I know we were near 70+ free throws. There were 2 other officials there, and after the game we asked their opinion if we had strangled the game. Both of them didnt think so and were suprised when they heard the foul total b/c they felt the game had a nice flow too it.
Yes, I threw that whistle away after the game!

grunewar Sat Jan 16, 2010 02:26pm

Amazed!

If you had ~ 60 fouls, in a four quarter game of 8 minutes quarters, you would have blown the whistle every 32 seconds JUST FOR FOULS. Now, if we say there were just 5 violations per quarter, that's 80 stoppages (minus timeouts), with a stoppage every 24 seconds. If there were 10 violations a quarter (pretty likely) it would have been a stoppage every 19 seconds.

What game flow?

I hate those games.....and most all of us have had em.

The players determine the game flow in most games. All we can do is react to what they're doing. And if they want to engage in a hack-fest, there's really not a damn thing we can do about it but just keep on calling what we've been calling consistently and evenly. Sometimes they'll adjust to us; sometimes they won't.

If somebody tried to tell me that we strangled the game when I got in one of those, I'd tell 'em "Nope, either the players strangled the game by insisting on committing stoopid fouls or the coaches strangled the game by allowing their players to keep committing stoopid fouls. All we did was call those stoopid fouls."

Iwo, I never worry about games like that. There's just not much that you can do with them.

JMO.....

grunewar Sat Jan 16, 2010 03:14pm

JR - agree. Just don't know how some other officials could possibly say the game flow was "nice" with those kinds of numbers. It is what it is.....

I had a 7G game once when I first started - my P and I blew our whistles so much I had a headache after the first quarter.....19 -24 seconds between TWEETS would have been a long time in that game.

Judtech Sat Jan 16, 2010 03:40pm

I was just happy no one got hurt!! I did find out that the visiting team does not use HS 'certified" officials, but parents or rec league refs who are not a part of the local association. Apparently, due to the whinning by the coach, they are accustomed to a more physical style of play. Also, the phrase "your player initiated the contact" is unknown to the coach, players or fans.
As for the number of fouls, I know both teams hit the double bonus in the 1st qtr, the visitors hit it in the 3rd and the home team 1/2 thru the 4th. So that is 40. Visitors fouled alot in 4th to get back into it. I am pretty sure we didnt make a "down and back" without a whistle in the overtime.
I will say that there were NOT very many turnovers!! Also, our game started a little before 7, my wifes game started about 7:45 and when I went back to change after the game she had left me a message saying she was leaving her school and asking if I could put a load of laundry in before she got home!!!

Good point; don't worry about the crowd unless they are throwing out profanities etc. I generally laugh inside about most of their ignorant comments. Along those lines, I called a varsity boys game last night with two officials I did not know and had never worked with (the guys I was supposed to work with both got subs). My female partner, who called a decent game but was a bit different personality wise, ended up having game management eject a home fan with about three minutes left in the game. I asked her after the game what the guy said, thinking he dropped an f bomb on her or something, and this was it: "you have to be the worst official ever." I was dumbfounded that she would have a fan ejected for that, or why she would even care. She was really proud of that ejection but I found it embarrassing. If a coach said that, definite T; a fan says it, who cares?

Report to State Association!

Judtech,
Has this school been reported to the state association for not using certified officials?

I had a fan get on me the other night at a BV game. I called a foul on A1 home team. Fan Hollers out, " Hey Ref, I got your cell phone and it has 7 missed calls on it". I cracked up, best one I've heard in a while:D:D:D

This is a private school and they opted out of using certified State officials to save money. No public school plays them, only other privates. Private schools here have their own governing body. But this school was upset no public's would play them this year!!
