Broken Backboard!

Gallon from Oklahoma just shattered the backboard early in the 2nd half of the game with Gonzaga in Spokane.

Obviously an end of the year SportsCenter highlight.

And he never even caught the pass.

Let's see how long of a delay this becomes. :(

Yeah, I'm curious too.

BTW the player who broke the glass is listed on ESPN.com as Tiny Gallon --- 6' 9", 300 lbs. :D

It would be unbelievably ironic if that's really what his mother named him.

According to Sportscenter, Keith "Tiny" Gallon is listed as 6' 9" 290 lbs.

The game was being played in Gonzaga's 2nd Home, Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, where they only play 1-2 games a year.

The replay can be found on various sites online for anyone who missed it.

You think he's big, you should see his brother, Imperial.

Thanks to this, I just went to YouTube and watched the Darryl Dawkins videos from the 1970s. While this break is, essentially, a fluke, Dawkins tried to break the board (the second one, at least) and was threatened with a $5000 fine if he did it again. Those also led to backboard redesign including breakaway rims and better shatter-resistant glass.

All I remembered at the time was that I was about 8 years old and I thought it was *way* cool.

Frankly, with as much "hanging and swinging" on rims at the college and especially the NBA level, I'm a bit susprised it doesn't happen more often.

I keep replaying this, & I have to agree why is this something that doesn't happen more in College or NBA Games?

According to what they said on ESPN, the last time this happened at Spokane Arena was 9-10 years ago.

Lucas makes his shots

Of course what is widely held to be the first backboard shattered in a pro game came in warm-ups before the first game ever played by the Boston Celtics, the BAA 1946 lid-lifter at Boston Arena when a player front-rimmed a warmup shot and the improperly installed backboard shattered.

The player was Chuck Connors.

A local high school player who ended up playing D1, on a then nationally-ranked high school team broke a backboard at another school during an away game his senior season. He was widely known as a dunker, but it's the first and only time I've heard of it happening around here. They had to move the rest of the game into the school's second gym.

My first memory of basket destruction was when Shaq brought down the entire goal at New Jersey in the early 90's.
