Another interesting partner moment

I posted a thread a while back (some will remember -- I deleted the thread after about a day) about a partner who called a 5-second violation on an endline throw-in as the new lead.

Yesterday, we had a clock malfunction. We were about 90 seconds into the second quarter and had absolutely no reference point (other than 8:00) for resetting the clock. We hadn't had a whistle up to that point and I

So I did what I could. I stood at the table and had small talk with the timer until I heard one assistant say 6:39 and the other team's assistant say 6:30 (independently). Good enough for me and for everyone else.

In comes aforementioned partner who apparently is getting grief from the stands (and some of it not-so-nice). He demands that the PA announcer make an announcement and tell them to stop it. As soon as he walked away, I told the PA guy to, under no circumstances, make such an announcement. The AD was nearby, and I motioned him over. I told him that apparently some fans on the other side were being rowdy and could he please go over and monitor the situation.

At halftime, partner was livid. He couldn't understand why a PA announcer couldn't handle such a simple instruction. Instead of telling him I told the guy not to make an announcement I let him vent and slipped into the restroom area to get away for a minute.

This is not the first time this has happened to this guy -- apparently he gave the same instruction to someone else last season and the school reported him to the assignor and the state, who both told him he handled the situation poorly.

I'm not sure you were a good partner. Why didn't you just tell him what you did or discuss it with him on the court? Can you give us a PG-rated example of what was said? It sounds like he needs thicker skin or should have asked game admin to escort them out of the gym.

well handled. Why throw gas on the fire? And crowd control is the responsibility of home management, and you got the proper person to do his job. Let him do it.

It was all PG, frankly, just the usual obnoxious stuff, apparently, and more of what I was talking about in the thread I started recently. Just some ABS but from the fans. I had no idea this was going on -- I was working a game and wasn't really paying attention to the stands.

As for the partner: History. A long history.

I'm off to the Wisconsin-Ohio State game or I'd dig deeper. Let's just say I have no problem with how I handled it. Another partner I would've discussed this with at halftime. There's no discussing with some people.
