Numbers

I do not have my book with me. Are numbers allowed on Headbands, Wristbands, or Socks?
I seem to recall that numbers can only reside on the front and back of a jersey.
Can numbers be on shorts?

3-6-1
One visible manufacturer's logo/trademark/reference or school logo/mascot is permitted on wristbands, headband and compression shorts.

Thanks Tanner
I can give that information to the crew working the game I am watching.

To add, (forgot you asked about socks and shorts)...

There are no restrictions on socks.

3-4-5
Uniform pants/skirts shall adhere to the following:
a. One one visible manufacturer's logo/trademark/reference is permitted. See 3-6-2 for size requirements.

OK... you mention manufacturer's logo/trademark/reference or school logo/mascot. But numbers do not fall into that catagory.

I agree.

Zoochy Mon Dec 14, 2009 10:47pm

Therefore, numbers are only allowed on the front and back of the jersey.
Right? :)

tjones1 Mon Dec 14, 2009 11:00pm

I'm not sure I agree with that...

It states in 3-4-3
Numbers shall adhere to the following:
a. Team jerseys shall include the team member's number, which shall be at least 6 inches high on the back and at least 4 inches high on the front and not less that 3/4 inch in width excluding the border
b. The numbers(s) shall be centered vertically and horizontally.
c. The numbers(s) on the front and back of the team jersey sall be the same color and style.
d. Each team member shall be numbered on the front and back of the team jersey with plain Arabic numerals. The following numbers are legal: (omitted).
e. No more than three colors.........

By that, they must be on the team jersey; however, I don't think they are restricted to only the jersey.

Right? :)

Unless the trademark or logo is a number. Personally, I would try to avoid being fashion police if reasonably possible. It does seem very reasonable for a manufacturer or supplier to use a number as a logo.

G- do you think the crew you are watching is hoping you will give them that info?

3-5-3d: "A headband ... must be ... unadorned."

2008-2009 Interps: SITUATION 3: The home team wishes to honor a teammate by putting his/her initials on the headbands and wristbands worn by the team. RULING: Illegal; headbands and wristbands must be unadorned. The only permissible adornment is either one manufacturer's logo or the school mascot/logo. The illegal items must be removed or made legal in order for a team member to participate. The initials may be put in the side insert or above the neckline of the team jersey. (3-5-3b, c; 3-4-2c)

Ha ha, you funny! I know you would not listen to me!
This was just an observation on my part. While I am in the stands, I would never volunteer my knowledge onto another person. I guess that if I officiate this team, then I will have to be the one to tell them they can not wear 'Green' headbands with their 'White' jerseys. Nor can they wear the number on the head band if the other requirements abide by the rules.
I would make this observation available to the referee. Let him/her address the coach.

Can anyone give a justified reason why only specific numbers are allowed & others are not?

According to the NFHS 2009-2010 Basketball Uniform Information, the legal numbers are: 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, & 55. Also that a team can't have a 0 & a 00.

Why aren't numbers 6,7, 8, & 9 allowed, either a standalone number, a beginning numer, or an ending number?

0 - 5: One handed reporting.

0 & 00: Both used to be allowed, but some computer scorebooks couldn't tell the difference so now only one is allowed.

Most normal people do not have 6, 7, 8, or 9 fingers on one hand.
0 and 00 are the same number per computer talk.
