I agree about the CMG. Great idea, but way too big.

What works really well for me is the classic Fox 40 with a pipe bit tip stuck on it. Honig's has them for $0.40.

I use the mini (CMG) for volleyball but not for basketball. Even though they say it is as loud as the classic, I don't think it is.

Close.. I believe the Pearl is 2-chamber. The Classic is 3-chamber. ;)

I stand corrected the classic is a 3 chamber design.

It still takes a lot of air to make the sonic tweet.

Me three on "great idea, but way too big."

I started putting a pipe bit on a classic about 5 years ago. I think it works great.

I agree. Two times I've worked with an official who used a mini and at some point during both games I couldn't hear their whistle. I just saw a fist go up and was waiting to hear a tweet but never did.

whistles

When I first started I used the Fox mini, for my first yr. My second yr I was in a big gym and the Varsity officials told me they couldn't hear my whistle and that I needed to switch, I have used the Classic ever since and won't even think about changing.

I was using a mini early on and didn't realize it until I did my first varsity game. My partner asked me about it afterwards and I realized I had the mini. I got the classic after that, and worked a tourney with him a few months later. He noticed the difference.

I got the same advice last year. I sent out my internet order that night, and was using the Classic Fox 40 a few nights later.

However, the Mini is soooooo much better than anything with a pea in it... which a newbie was using the other night. Clearly a 99 cent plastic special. I thought I would cry.:(

I'm on our training committee, training those candidates that passed the written rules test on floor mechanics, so that they may, hopefully, pass our upcoming floor exam. Even though we told them to purchase Fox 40's, we had one young lady show up with a metal whistle. We had them practicing calling fouls, proper signals, reporting to the table, etc. As soon as she blew her whistle I thought that I was back in high school again.
