disappointed

Bought a couple of sonic 40s on the recommendation of another official. Self evaluation brought me to this buy as I sometimes feel I don't get enough air in my whistle.

Weird sound to my ear. It's louder, but sounds like a Lionel train is coming around the corner.

What say you?

Nevadaref Tue Nov 10, 2009 09:37pm

If you need a louder whistle go with the dolphin, but the Fox 40 Classic is still the best.

Agreed. Man, that sonic sounds weird compared to the good ol' Fox 40.

First time I blew tonight my partner was snickering. Thought I'd try it in a kids game before any Varsity dates. More importantly, I think you want to all sound uniform with your whistles.

The sonic is louder and sounds a lot like the fox 40. Its not exactly the same but I think that the little variation is not noticed by many people.

My thoughts exactly.

The Sonik to me is a total failure. I found it hard to blow and the pitch was awful. I do, however, recommend the Dolphin if you're not satisfied with the good ol' Fox 40. It's more forceful but still has a good tone.

Forget the dolphin.... Fox 40 is still the standard by which all others are judged... and even though Rut hates them, I'm a CMG fan.

shavano Wed Nov 11, 2009 10:55am

I can use the CMG's for soccer, but found that I was chewing them in basketball.

Love the CMG. When I was doing a lot of rec youth (4 games back to back ), my jaw was killing me while using the Fox 40 classic. I guess I was clenching my jaw. I have since switched to the CMG. No more jaw pain.

IowaMike Wed Nov 11, 2009 12:04pm

I tried the CMG and felt like I had a shoe in my mouth. After my first few years, I tried the Fox 40 mini and have used it ever since.

So...the CMG caused TMJ?

Funny,
I use the cmg for basketball and volleyball and the classic for soccer. Go figure.

Hey me too. I like the idea of not having my teeth broken out if I take one to the kisser but my jaw hurts aweful after the game.

The sonic is loud but the four chamber design requires more air flow to match the volume of the classic 40 (2 chamber).

I like to use the sonic is rec / middle school games then when I switch to the classic for HS games I have a really loud whistle.

Close.. I believe the Pearl is 2-chamber. The Classic is 3-chamber. ;)

I agree about the CMG. Great idea, but way too big.

What works really well for me is the classic Fox 40 with a pipe bit tip stuck on it. Honig's has them for $0.40.

I use the mini (CMG) for volleyball but not for basketball. Even though they say it is as loud as the classic, I don't think it is.

I stand corrected the classic is a 3 chamber design.

It still takes a lot of air to make the sonic tweet.

Me three on "great idea, but way too big."

I started putting a pipe bit on a classic about 5 years ago. I think it works great.

I agree. Two times I've worked with an official who used a mini and at some point during both games I couldn't hear their whistle. I just saw a fist go up and was waiting to hear a tweet but never did.

whistles

When I first started I used the Fox mini, for my first yr. My second yr I was in a big gym and the Varsity officials told me they couldn't hear my whistle and that I needed to switch, I have used the Classic ever since and won't even think about changing.

Adam Thu Nov 12, 2009 03:59pm

I was using a mini early on and didn't realize it until I did my first varsity game. My partner asked me about it afterwards and I realized I had the mini. I got the classic after that, and worked a tourney with him a few months later. He noticed the difference.

cdaref Fri Nov 13, 2009 01:44pm

+1 for the CMG

Love it. Dont like the mini (even with CMG).

No More Mini Fox, The Classic Fox 40 Is The Best ...

I got the same advice last year. I sent out my internet order that night, and was using the Classic Fox 40 a few nights later.

However, the Mini is soooooo much better than anything with a pea in it... which a newbie was using the other night. Clearly a 99 cent plastic special. I thought I would cry.:(

I'm on our training committee, training those candidates that passed the written rules test on floor mechanics, so that they may, hopefully, pass our upcoming floor exam. Even though we told them to purchase Fox 40's, we had one young lady show up with a metal whistle. We had them practicing calling fouls, proper signals, reporting to the table, etc. As soon as she blew her whistle I thought that I was back in high school again.
