Can a Coach's Instructions Earn a T?

Ever whacked a coach for instructions you heard him give to his team?

Never done it. Never seen it. But it is not inconceivable.

Example #1: Use of profanity, particularly if it was loud enough for others to hear.

Example #2: Just stay in the lane guys. These idiot officials ain't gonna call
3 seconds.

What if you head the head coach say "put an elbow right in his teeth" during a timeout conversation?

Juulie Downs Sun Oct 11, 2009 07:40pm

I don't think you can whack him yet. Give him "The Look" and keep in mind that if you see any of his guy looking to obey, you could consider whacking or tossing them both.

"Coach, you and the player who throws a flagrant elbow will be ejected if that happens."

Turn and walk away.

I try to stay away from the coach during a timeout. Why should you be close enough to hear that unless it is when you are informing the team of the first horn or trying to get them out of a timeout.

Timeout called. Throw-in in front of Team A's bench. Administering official is to be out away from the bench in line with the other official. If its a 30 second TO that official is not very far away. It seems like it would be easy to hear the coach.

BTW I'm not looking to whack a coach. A fan asked me what I would do. My first reaction was I'd do nothing other than watch for rough play.

Isn’t this the essence of unsporting behavior?
I would certainly consider it.

I had it happen in one of my games and this is exactly how I handled it.

I'm Trail, in front of coaches bench. He yell's out to his team to start throwing elbows. Without drawing more attention to the idiot, I simply told him, "the first one to do it is gone, with you, coach!" Good thing the kids were a lot smarter than the coach. No elbows thrown...

This is why you do not listen to fans about how to apply rules. They think what is instructed by a coach is directly under our jurisdiction purely on their ignorance of the rules and our role in the game.

Peace

What would we have if we went this route? Flagrant personal foul against the offending player and a flagrant technical foul against the head coach, giving the offended team 4 shots and the ball?

Yes, and in that order. Of course, the offended player would have to shoot the flagrant FTs (unless injured) and then any player(s) on the offended team could shoot the T. And the inbound spot would be the division line, not the spot of the foul because the technical came last.

Don't forget - the AC would be seat belted.

Why would one adjudge the coach's instructions to be unsporting only if a player acts on them? If the instructions are unsporting, then shouldn't they be penalized immediately?
