Let's go already

I have read "Get In, Get Done, and Get Out" (I like this statement) on this forum as part of someone's signature. That quote leads me to my thought/question. Most partners I work with want to retrieve the ball after the game and give it back to the home coach or the table personel. I do not like this. Even if we didn't have any trouble in the game, I want to head for the locker room. Is this considered rude or impolite? We tell the team captains to have their teams track down the ball if it gets away during the game. Why should we have to get the ball after the game?

NEVER EVER EVER EVER chase after the ball. During or after the game you have better things to do. During the game you should be observing the players and benches. Someone will return the ball for you. Afterall, you can't play without it.

After the game you should be getting to a predesignated, safe and isolated location. Let the school administrator or the team worry about the ball.

Unless, of course, you happen to officiate in Massachusetts. Then you get to watch coaches and players, who really don't want to shake hands after the game, shake hands after the game, with your technical foul pistol missing bullets.

I've had partners who will go shake hands with the coaches after the game. Meanwhile, I'm standing at the door wanting to rink their necks.

Don't ever chase the ball anywhere. It will get back to its rightful owner.

How nice.

Did these partners also go up into the stands and thank all of the parents for their helpful comments?

Let the ball bounce, roll, or sit. There is nothing to be gained by getting it; no one will remember you did it anyway.

Maybe they could bring cookies to their next game.

Padgett nailed it as usual. When the game is over you get out of there unless there is a dispute over the last-second shot or anything else that you have to address. As long as the score and book is right, head to the locker room. Someone will find the ball, I assure you. Sticking around is only opening yourself up to trouble.
