I prefer to say, "One shot", or whatever the number of free throws will be, and then bounce the ball.

Ditto. I learned this on this forum this year. I used to say "Let it hit", but now I just use the "One shot" or "Two shots" or "One and one".

When a kid shoots an air ball and then has another shot coming, when I throw it back to him I say, "Boy, that sucked". Usually they laugh and say, "Yeah".

I don't do that too much in 3rd grade games, however.

I did quite a few 5th grade games this year where it was clear that players hadn't ever played before. In those games, I say, "Wait till it hits", at least in the second half. In the first half I say, "Okay kids, don't step in until the ball hits something, got it? Stay in your spots until it's legal" Coaches actually appreciate this.

One of my minor headaches is when partners say "wait til it hits the rim."

I always said "let it hit" prior to this season. I decided (due in large part to input from here) that less is more. Now, I just say the number.

"One."
"Two."
"Three

I figure I don't even need to say "shot" since they all know why they're standing there. :)

If players are inching on or over the line prior to the ball being handed in, or if I see a player on the first of two with his toe on the line, I'll add "watch your toes" to the mix.

I also agree with the lady from the west coast; lower levels sometimes require a bit extra to keep the headaches to a minimum.

And, FWIW, I think it's easier on the hit since there's a sound to go with. That said, I don't care either way. I played on the release, and started reffing middle school that way in college. I quit for a few years, and it was on the hit since then.

It probably belongs in the same category as the coach requesting a timeout. Might be better with a change but it's not likely to happen.

Peace

Maybe when the coach can only call TOs during a dead ball?;)

A fan told me of an official who USED to say, "Shoot one." Or, "Shoot two." The guy went up to him later and asked why he said "Shoot two" when there were 3 officials and wondered which two should be shot. The official shortened it to "One" or "Two".

This fan also showed up to the opener one year to razz that same official and called to him before the tip to reveal his 'foot locker shirt'. The official smiled at him, unzipped his jacket and revealed that the crew was going with grey that night. Everyone had a good chuckle over that.

You mean you're advocating coaches being allowed to call timeouts? YIKES!

OK - here we go again.

Generally, anything beyond "One", "One and one", "Two", or "Three" is bothersome to me.

Yup!! Supported here in writing...:)

2001-2002 Interps Part 2.

SITUATION 12: Team A has used all allotted time-outs. The scorer notifies the referee, who properly advises the Team A coach at the beginning of Team A’s last called time-out. During play later in the game, A4 attempts to call time-out when he/she is being pressured by B2 and 83. U2 ignores the request by A4. RULING: U2 should honor the request of A4, even when this would be a time-out in excess of the number allotted. Game officials do not have discretionary authority to assist players in avoiding rules violations. (2-7-6; 5-12-2)

Peace
