I have been asked by the local parks and recreation department for my thoughts on issuing technical fouls. To me it is a T if any of the following happen:

A player or coach curses; gets personal; attempts to show me up.

When do you T?

Thanks!

1.Cursing? Depends on what they say and who they say it to.

2.Gets Personal? Real easy one. Always in my opinion.

3.Attempts to show you up? I guess that depends on what your definition is.

There are many more things they can do to get a T under normal rules, but I think that is a much better guideline. Everything else is personal choice on what and how to apply it.

Peace

When a coach does not recognize a "Stop sign".

When I object to the language.

When, I think, someone else heard and may object to the language.

If I am allowed to say:
  • "Coach, that was a bad play!"
  • "Coach, that was a horrible substitution!"
  • "Coach, your team, cheerleaders and fans are the worst I've seen in 20 years!"
  • "Coach, your teams will never play in this league again!"

then, I may be more lenient.

It really depends on the objectives of that particular rec league. I work two rec leagues which downplay competitiveness and emphasize sportsmanship and fun. Both leagues also have a competitive (classic) division that has a different set of rules.

In the rec division for both of these organizations, any profanity, no matter its intent or reason, is not only a technical, it is considered flagrant and requires ejection. This rule holds for players and coaches. If a ref hears it, he calls it - period. One league goes from 5th grade thru 8th and the other goes 3rd thru HS. The second one does not have this rule at the HS level, but leaves it up to the discretion of the officials to call technicals at about the same level they would in an actual HS game.

If your organization does not want to be this draconian, then don't make all profanity flagrant, but have it still warrant a T.

I'd like to address this issue I hear all the time regarding "personal" remarks made at officials. IMHO, the remark "That stinks" following a call and the remark "You stink" are one and the same. I don't make a di stink tion.

Trash talking should be an automatic T in rec leagues. It leads to nothing but trouble.

    T's

I think you should take a lil talkie talkie until the stop signis needed from the coach but take almost nothing from the players.

    Easy T's in my opin.

Any F-Bombs and directed profanity...WHACK...Loud profanity....WHACK....self directed "damn" that is not that loud I am letting go. Showing me up by arguing with me on the floor...Whackola.....

    Larks
