Double Whistle sitch...........
I'm C at table during inbounds under hoop by H after made hoop by V (no kidding). Small gym. Inbound pass is taken by H team guard and play advances right at me. T is below FT line. Train wreck as (my opinion) V defender slides in front of ball handler. It is within 5 ft. of me. I put fist up and give the big block sell. I turn to table (2 ft. away) and report. As I begin moving toward becoming new lead I pass V's bench and hear V's HC say, "He's got a charge". Oh, sh!t....I turn to see T coming toward me. I never heard his whistle (Loud AND small gym) or saw him in the picture. "I've got a charge", he said. I tell him "The play is coming at me, I'm right there"...he says "Yes but I'm trail". He is also the R, he says to go with double foul since we both think we're right. We inbound with POI and away we go. I realize that trail should have this but does proximity matter? The crash was severe enough that I wanted to make sure A whistle was blown. Had T passed I would have looked like an idiot for not blowing this since they almost landed on me. Or had I momentarily withheld the tweet waiting for T it may have appeared like my call would have been a mental coin flip. Whenever we pregame we discuss a double whistle, and in the case of a block/PC situation we will defer to the L , since the play is usually going towards him. We are not a regular crew, tournament time mixes officials up. The T (and R) has a lot more 3 man work than me. Input?

Blow your whistle, and hold your signal until you're sure T doesn't have anything.
Here's the kicker, since you both gave the prelim, it would have been too late for either of you to give in. |
Always a good idea to make eye contact with at least 1 partner before heading to the table to make sure they understand what call you've made and where you want the ball put into play, FTs, shooter, etc. I know you were tableside and it's just a quick turn to give your info to them, but I might suggest slowing down a bit. Loud, small gyms make it more difficult to hear the double whistle....but looking up at the T might have prevented what happened next.
Snaqs is right....whether you made eye contact or not with your P, the prelim signal by both of you forced the double foul call. |
I've watched so many games this weekend, forget which one. There was a double whistle and both lead and trail had a player control call. Both reported #, they had no idea the other had the call also. Right call, just a liitle quick on lead's part IMHO as it was coming out of trail's primary. Lead looked like he did the dramatic TV 'sell' and got a little caught up in the moment.
Easy to do. |

If there is one thing I do right, it's hold my whistle. I'm very aware of my partners, at least when there are double whistles. I've had the same thing happen and a few have had tunnel vision, never even realizing someone else made a call. |

We pregame to divide the court vertically in the backcourt between the Trail and the C when there is a press situation (more than four players in the backcourt). The Trail takes two-thirds and the C has the one-third closest to him.
Therefore, for the OP's situation my crew would have the C taking the call and the Trail holding his whistle. |
What "kind" of press was this? If it was just a one-on-one situation, then T has responsibility for all the calls in the back court.

Full court man to man....small gym like I said in OP. Play happened about 6' before timeline near table. (C was at table).

The point likely being that if there enough players in the BC, at some point, the C would take this call. Example: if there were none, except the dribbler and his guard, then T takes the call. |
Had a game in a small gym last season. 2 man crew, & I was T in the foreclourt. L whistles a foul with a prelim of a PC foul, then changes it to a block. Fortunately, he was tableside and I was able to simply go to the end line to administer the FTs. He had a call that was not easy to sell.

Discussing double-whistles, in my opinion, is less important than discussing partner recognition. Once you recognize your partner, you can defer to partner or you can talk to partner. |
Every trip after made hoop there was probably 6 players (3&3) in the backcourt. Traps in corner away from T on baseline happened a lot. When I was C I would linger a bit to help T. Sounds like you were there, Mick:)

You were fighting an *ego* the just had to call sumpthin', and he kicked it right in front of you. (He was probably hoping that nobody saw his signal.) |
