Classy gesture of sportsmanship

As a soccer guy, this reminded me of how teams will return possession of the ball to the opposing team following it being put out of play for an injury.
Soccer has a tradition of the players restoring the balance of play when something goes amiss.

I've often wondered why basketball teams didn't do something similar to restore the previous situation when the administration of the game got messed up.

Here is the first case that I've heard about.

Great story Nevada.

With coaches and fans running onto the floor, fighting, trash talk, and all the commentary about officials lately and the "importance of the game", it's good to read a story about sportsmanship. Thanks for sharing

Nice story. Worth making a fuss about in this day and age of a 100-0 game and a coach who trips a player, etc.

It's easy to think that things are getting worse. But I think that there have always been miscreants who did this kind of thing. The difference is that 30 years ago we started seeing this crap on TV, and now there's YouTube.

People are stunningly bad at assessing risk. Quirk of evolution.

Would totally agree with this observation. Never said things were getting worse, or had become worse. The implication was simply: With so much bad/questionable conduct one can point to, it's great to see someone with integrity given the spotlight.

"I hope Coach Rohlman doesn't make him run for missing the free throws."

Just curious, why didn't the shooting team just violate? I don't want to diminish what was done, but it could have been done without having the player hurt his stats.

I'm guessing they just thought this was the easiest or maybe they didn't think of your, or other possible options at the time.

Adam Wed Feb 18, 2009 12:49pm

You're probably right. They may not even know you can violate during a T shot.

Jesse James Wed Feb 18, 2009 01:08pm

Probably thought the same officials that were so bent on sticking an administrative T here, might view whistling the free thrower stepping over the line as a game interruptor.

Good judgement by the coach and free thrower.

Adam Wed Feb 18, 2009 01:09pm

I would have called the T, and suggested a violation to the coach after he said he didn't want it.

Great story. Thanks.

ESPN ran a segment on this on SportsCenter. They even interviewed one of the officials. He stated that he had to assess the technical foul, despite the opposing coach stating that he didn't desire it, so as not to compromise the integrity of the game.

I happen to agree with him. The official's job is to make the proper call. It is up to the coaches and players to decide what they wish to do with their opportunities.
