What really shocked me was that the coach actually knew the rule on how many free throws should have been awarded. The odds of that happening makes me think the whole story was made up. Of course, it could be because this has happened many times before to his team and the penalty is just ingrained in him.

The coach didn't know the rule at the time. He had some help and learned later that the administration was incorrect. It's possible that the posts on this forum were a large source of his information.

How does that work? Is there an evaluator or something at every game? Do they have TV monitors?

I'm not there, so I don't know the details. My understanding, however, is that they must be rules based protests. IOW, not judgment calls but the coach has to protest what he considers a misapplication of the rule. He must provide the book, IMS.

They handed out a sheet this year at the rules meetings in Missouri about protests. They are similar to baseball protests. I believe the coach has 10 minutes to produce proof that a rule has been misapplied. And yes, it must be about a rule, not about judgment calls.

Question: is there some sort of punishment for losing the appeal? IOW, if the rule book confirms the officials were correct, does the coach lose a TO or something?

The coach should be given the seat belt for the rest of the game.

Missouri does that to all sports. Only applies to rules, not judgement
