Double Personal Foul in MCAC game
 

Newbie here...saw one called today on TV in a game between St.Peter's & Canisius. 4:51 in 1st half...St.Pete player driving to hoop, contact, a couple players on the floor, announcer& color guy debating whether it's a block or charge while they mention that the refs are huddling. Next thing they say is that it's a double personal foul on Canisius and St.Pete's ball on an endline throw-in.
Question to the vets...are double personal something that you would see often or are they rare?

This came up in our board meeting today. It happened twice at a local division 2 college game yesterday. Our interpreter, rightfully, suggested going up with the fist, making eye contact with your partner(s), and figuring out who has what.

If you're talking about a "blarge", one happened in a Pac-10 game up at UW a few weeks back. I think someone posted about another on this board earlier this season.

It happens. High school, college, and even the NBA. It happens.

I just about had one the other night...in fact I should've called it. Had a team running a high post offense all night and the post player & defender were grabbing and pushing and leaning. I had been warning them all night (preventative officiating) but never pulled the trigger. Thinking back on it...all I probably had to do was ring them up for a double foul and it probably would've subsided.

Double Foul is an effective game management tool
 

A double foul gets everyone's attention and cleans up the aggressive "jostling for position." Use it early if players do not heed verbal redirection.

I agree. Early in the season, and early in the game.

If you have done due diligents in pre-game, IT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN!!!!

I disagree. It most certainly can happen outside of our control; and where the DF is the correct call. That's part of why it is in the book!

Yeah, it's in the book because it does happen, but if you discuss it in pre-game, then it should not happen! If both officials freeze and look first, it should never happen. That's all I'm saying.

And for the NevadaRef, if you want me to start using the dictionary, I will - just 4 U!

WOW! I wish my pre-game could control what players do.

How do you do that?? Do you have magical powers?

Next time I will put DUE DILIGENCE (sp) into my pre-game and then everything will be just peachy.

You guys are talking about different things. Sallender is talking about the "blarge". Forks, it seems to me that you're talking about two knuckleheads who legitimately foul each other.

How about the final basket of the game? Anyone else think that it might've been tapped in by a defensive player? If so, the ball should've become dead on the horn (since it's not a try) and not counted. I only saw one replay, but it sure looked like the defensive rebounder poked it up in the air.

My book is in my bag. . . Anybody know if we can use replay for that scenario? I think no. . .

Help me understand....

How do you pre-game so that two opposing players "NEVER" become aggressive to a point that you need to intervene. As you will notice in my original post I stated verbal redirection was not enough.

I also realize we are actually addressing two versions of a double foul. I agree that a "Blarge" should (but not always) be avoidable, if properly pre-gamed.

Thank you Scrapper! If you talk about it in the pre-game, the blarge should be a distant memory....

I understand your comment aobut two opposing players becoming too aggressive. That should easily be taken care of by either double personals or technicals.

And I'm not sure I want to be the "meat", but instead the "grinder".....

Talking about something in pre-game doesn't mean someone won't have a brain fart during the game. We could say the same thing about correctable errors.

Ever have a double whistle and not hear your partner's whistle? I have.

It Can Happen, And If, And When It Does, I'll Know How To Correctly Penalize ..
 

Good point. After a good pregame, and with good visual communication throughout the game, the only way that I'm going to have a blarge in my game is if, due to the crowd noise, I don't hear my partner's whistle, or he doesn't hear mine, there are a few very big players between us, and we're both trying to sell our call. I've had a few of these in twenty-eight years, but, luckily, my partner has always had the same call as me. Block/block, or charge/charge. Maybe it's the luck of the Irish, but in any case, I hope the luck keeps working.

Since nobody has responded, I'll ask again. Anybody see this play or know where to see it online?

And after looking through the replay rules, it seems clear that this play is reviewable.
