Lob Just Before the Buzzer
Baylor-Kansas State game tonight. Just before half ends, K State player lobs ball toward basket with teammate breaking for basket looking for the Alley Oop play. Buzzer sounds while ball in air and player looking to make Alley Oop fails to touch ball, ball nearly goes in basket.
If it went in, disallow if you are sure it is a pass???? |
In a word, no.

Not a chance, unless you're planning on all hell breaking loose.

Ah, no.

Negative, ghost rider.

You could if you were positive. But there would be no way to be positive on that play. In fact, I think he was shooting.

Here are the pertinent questions to ask yourself.
1. I am ready to die? 2. Do I have enough life insurance that my loved one will be taken care of when I die? 3. Where do I want to be buried? 4. Have I made funeral arrangements yet? Do you see a pattern emerging here? Don't make that call!!!!!!!!!!! |

Rule 5-1-1: "A goal is made if a live ball enters the basket from above and remains in or passes through." No mention that there has to be a "shot", "attempt", "try", etc. So, how about whether it's a 3-point basket? 5-2-1: "A successful try, tap, or thrown ball from the field by a player who is located behind the team's own 19'-9" arc counts 3 points." There are, of course, the exceptions, such as if the ball touches the floor first, touches a teammate inside the arc, etc. Iow, we don't have to judge if it's a shot or pass, even to count a 3-point basket. |

My point was simply that M&M's citation doesn't apply to this situation. In order to wave something like this off, I'd have to be 100% certain it was a pass and not a shot...and I'm rarely 100% certain of anything these days. ;) |
