Should I Switch?

I was looking at my schedule for this week and not sure how I missed this and not sure that it matters but tonight I have a girls varsity game. Tommorrow a boys varsity game with the same 2 teams playing in both games. Should I have asked for a switch off of one of the games. We only have on varsity assignor who assigns both girls and boys and usually he doesn't do this but sometimes it does happen. He doesn't care. I just don't like having both the girls and boys on back to back nights. What do you all think.
Thanks for you input.

PS.
Tommorrow's Boys game will be a great game!

Have two great games!!

JugglingReferee Mon Jan 12, 2009 01:34pm

Do 'em both!

Not sure how it'd impact my decision, but are the 2 games at the same school? Or is it 1 game at School A and the other at School B?

Boys one night, girls the next -- will anyone even notice? I wouldn't even blink at doing this.

The way I read your statement, Rich, is that you would not do these assignments - but just one?

slow whistle Mon Jan 12, 2009 01:41pm

Maybe slightly off topic, but anybody ever run into the situation where you show up early for the varsity game, only to find that there is one official about to start the soph game? Do you jump in or no? The only reason I ask is that I have done this on two occassions and on both occassions I am positive that I got more grief from the varsity coaches during their games b/c they assumed I was a "Soph" official filling in for one of the varsity officials who did not show - which incidentally has also happened where we picked up a soph official to do the varsity game and it has been a good experience -the fact that someone is working a soph game does not on it's own make them a lesser official for a variety of reasons...but I digress...so do you make it a point to tell the coaches that you are filling in and that you are really there for the varsity game?

I wouldn't blink at working both -- I'd work both.

Me fail English? That's unpossible!

asdf Mon Jan 12, 2009 01:51pm

Not only should you work both games, you should be the R both games !!

Who cares?? Let your game management & presense on the court speak for itself...

No. As mentioned above, let your game speak for itself.

I've meet quite a few officials that were discovered & unltimately hired into NJCAA conferences by working girls Saturday morning freshman games.

One never knows who is watching!

Just to add to what Ch1town said, I would never do this because it would feel like I was big-timing the teams. It would be almost like I said, "Coach, knock it off, I was slumming earlier."

Always jump in. No question.

I had the exact situation come up that you described. I got to my V game early. JV had 1 official. I ran into the locker room, got changed, and jumped onto the court with about 8 or 9 minutes left in the first half. Visiting coach was riding me most of the game, thinking I was the other JV official and simply showed up late. Then, the head coach during the V game (same school), gave me grief, thinking 1 of the V guys didn't show, so they stuck me (a "JV" official) in. However, I took a little pleasure in knowing that my assignor had given the coaches an earful a few days later when he found out how I was treated, and explained that I was actually doing them a favor by filling in...

bigdogrunnin Mon Jan 12, 2009 02:12pm

Work the games. Earlier this season I worked a BV at one site (School A vs. School B). Got in my truck after the game, drove 30 minutes down the road and worked a GV game with School B having just finished their BV game. The BV team beat me there and were laughing when I walked in. IMO there is no conflict. Go in, do your best, and go home.

chartrusepengui Mon Jan 12, 2009 02:12pm

what's the difference if you do this or you do a boys/girls varsity game back to back the same evening the way some places do.

Forget everything else and just do both games well.

Exactly my point, it is very hard to pull this off without looking like a complete D-B....so I have never said anything and just born the brunt...my partners usually like it b/c they get left alone as I have gotten hammered!

Do them both. The majority of the crowd doesn't follow both the boy's and the girl's programs. The few that do could probably care less.

Enjoy the good one tomorrow...

mbyron Mon Jan 12, 2009 03:19pm

It's probably OK to work both, as long as you call it both ways. ;)

jdw3018 Mon Jan 12, 2009 03:27pm

I agree with everyone else saying do them both. I see absolutely no conflict.

In the states I've worked (KS and SC mainly, with a little NE and MO) it's normal to work a double-header with girls and boys the same night.

I'm glad you said that. I'm working a Soph game on Thursday. You just saved me a bunch of grief wondering if I was going to turn into a rookie all over again once I stepped on the floor! ;)

As for telling the coaches. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Why tell them? Perception. I'd rather them not believe I was a slacker who got to the sophomore game in the 2nd quarter. I'd rather be known for my own screwups than for mine plus someone else's. I just tell them that I was not assigned this game but was here so I'm filling in....no reference to the varisty game needed.

I also tell the administrator so they know that their varsity crew is already there. That is so they don't worry that no officials have arrived for the varsity game when game time is getting close.

DonInKansas Mon Jan 12, 2009 06:58pm

I guess working in Kansas I didn't know that other places played on different nights. HSBB nights here are GJV, BJV, GV, BV. Two officials for the JV games, 3 for the Varsity.

Don,

When I was in NE Kansas, I did quite a few triple-headers...one of the JV games (B or G, depending on who was playing in the "big" gym) and then both V games.

I guess I'm showing my experience as a two-year guy.:) I've worked with guys once this year and once last year who did all four games, but that was usually due to a late scratch by another official. I'm still building towards becoming a V official.

When I was in NE KS, I was still only a baseball guy. (Johnson County.)

Fill in

For the fill in question, you should ALWAYS help out an official in need. Working by yourself is no fun at any level.

I once was working a Sophmore game before a big time varsity game of two arch rival schools in the suburban Chicago area. I was a varsity official in this league and got a call at 4:30 for a 5:30 start. I agreed to fill in since I did not have a game that night.

Well the other guy does not show up. I know the varsity and jv coaches of both teams and they cooperate quite well. The three big time guys show up at halftime and refuse to fill in and help. Quote, "This game is below what I work". I was POed. I called assigner, they lost all the rest of the games that they had in this conference for rest of year and the next.

I also kicked them out of the officials lockeroom with not very many nice words to them. I have yet to forget how that felt. The coaches backed me up to the assigner and were a great deal of help.

Get Permission ???

Here in my little corner of the Land of Steady Habits, as a varsity official, we have to get permission from both varsity head coaches to help out in the junior varsity game before our varsity game due to a no show, injury, illness, etc. I guess that some varsity coaches may not want us to get tired doing two games in a row. I've never, in 28 years, heard about a a varsity coach, not allowing a varsity official to help out in a junior varsity game before the varsity game.

Engine1411 Fri Jan 16, 2009 12:04pm

In Georgia, the Varsity Girls and Boys play back to back in the same gym on the same night, usually 6pm Girls and 7:30 Boys. And the same crew does BOTH games... I would say keep them both and have a good time!

Same here in Texas. I don't think there is any problem working those games.

And if I see the JV game before mine is short-handed, you better believe I'm hustling to get dressed to help that person out. Working one-person sucks!

I am so glad I do not have this issue. I would not do this, but then again I do not have to. I would only be working the Boy’s game.

Peace
