We report - you decide. No - not Fox news - thank goodness.

A buddy and I were discussing the most insignificant stuff about the game and he wanted to know if I usually referred to the two lines on the ends of the court as endlines or baselines. I told him I usually said "baseline". He said he usually says "endline". We made a bet over which term is used most. The loser has to work a game and refer to both coaches as "Sir" (or "Ma'am" as the occasion dictates) the entire game!

Which term do you guys use? And don't skew your answers just to see me lose. I will find you and you will be sorry.

Hey - I said it was insignificant stuff.

AKOFL Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:16pm

I am a baseline guy. Not sure if that's a good thing since you also do it:):)

26 Year Gap Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:17pm

I use endline for the home bench side and baseline for the vistors bench side.;)

Clark Kent Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:18pm

baseline...but consider changing it! ;)

Adam Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:19pm

endline. Maybe we could do a poll.

bob jenkins Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:19pm

I prefer the rule book term.

ma_ref Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:21pm

I say baseline. To make this truly an impartial poll, you should remove your selection from the OP...just a suggestion...

That implies Mark has influence. ;)

Scratch85 Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:24pm

I refer to it as a baseline . . . but I also make frequent references to bankboard.:)

Raymond Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:27pm

Shouldn't this be an official official poll? Otherwise it's not scientific.

DonInKansas Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:34pm

Baseline guy here. I don't know if I've ever had a partner use endline. I'm only a two year guy tho...:p

Fixed it. :)

Scrapper1 Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:42pm

End line (Rule 1-2). I think the baseline is the bottom of the square "target" on the backboard, although I can't find it in the book right now.

fiasco Wed Jan 07, 2009 04:43pm

I use endline when talking to uptight refs so I'm not considered a moron.

Among everyone else, I use baseline.

Something that a player may use to make a bank shot, from a time long forgotten by most.

That's funny...I use baseline for the home bench end and endline for the visitor bench end.:p

Actually, I use baseline when talking to non-officials, like friends, my son and his teammates, etc...I use endline when talking basketball with other officials. Not sure why, and didn't even realize it until now.

I use baseline.

However, Mark, I hope you lose the bet and have to work one of his "girls, competitive, elite, 6th grade rivalry school games" for him! Only because I like the stories!! :D

NYBLUE Wed Jan 07, 2009 08:55pm

As a player, I used "baseline", but as an official I always call it the "endline".

Endline

Baseline, though endline is technically (rule) correct.

Well its all right, riding around in the breeze
Well its all right, if you live the life you please
Well its all right, even if the sun dont shine
Well its all right, were going to the end of the line

Actually, it should be "opposite OF". Lots of people say, "different than" when it should be "different from". But I've never heard that "opposite from" is ever, ever correct!

btw, Padgett, I say endline mostly, courtesy of Howard, who insists on it.

When did MSNBC's Rachel Maddow become "famous"? This week? I watched her appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart this past week, and she was parodied on Saturday Night Live last night. If I hadn't watched the Daily Show, I wouldn't have known who the heck she was on SNL last night. Did I miss something?
