Clean This One Up ?
i show up for the last 2 games of the local Holiday Classic. Tourneys been going on for 67 million years or so. It's a fun little tourney and i try to make the last couple of games every year.
In the 5th/6th place game they had the following sitch. The Home team takes a time out. After the time out they apparently put 6 players on the court. Neither official catches it. They make a three. They then steal the inbounds and make another three. Then they steal the ball again and make a lay-up. At this point the refs catch that they have 6 players on the court... Any thoughts on the clean up. The refs came up with take the points off the board and issued a T for 6 players on the court. My thinking is the points count, shoot the T, and eat the grief. What say you ? |

You should have been on the crew. |
I say you are correct. Plain and simple.

No seriously that level of game is probably a little out of my reach at this point. But I am a pretty competent Girls Varsity ref. |

Points count, shoot the T. Nothing supports taking points off the board; penalized when recognized.

I could see making this video reviewable at the appropriate levels (NCAA and NBA) and allowing the officials to cancel the points scored by the offending team. |
And, No, I'm Not Shemp ...

This is the same situation that happened in the Portland - Boston NBA game the other night (see appropriate thread). Everything that happens before the violation is discovered counts. Of course, the Blazer TV commentators got it wrong.
BTW - I'm Curly. Knock knock Who's there? New York New York who? Nyork, nyork, nyork I posted on a thread a while ago that Curly was actually a decent HS basketball player - not kidding. Read it somewhere reliable. |

In most cases the boys games involve more physical play, are faster, and often have action above the rim. Officiating those aspects of the game can be rather challenging and perhaps beyond someone who is a "competent girls ref." That same person may not have the foot-speed, a comfort with physical, aggressive action, or the necessary skills or knowledge to properly judge GT/BI and high-flying plays near the rim. It's definitely possible that a person who does mostly girls games has not cultivated these aspects of his/her officiating and consequently would not do a quality job on a boys game which involved those things. Of course, this person could be just fine on a boys game that doesn't include that kind of action. |

This is yet another example of people with poor rules knowledge getting assignments. It is absolutely imperative that at least one member of a varsity crew have a solid understanding of the rules. It is my opinion that those three individuals embarrassed your officiating association with their handling of that situation. Very sad. :( Keep working hard, and it won't be long before you begin being assigned to such games in favor of these folks. |
This is the second post in the last week about a team having 6 players on the court...I suggest we add some math questions to the 2009-2010 NFHS Basketball Test.

Quote:
T/F - An official shall, might, may, will halt play and assess a technical foul to the offending team when the official notices a team has six players on the court during a live ball (or it is brought to their attention by a player, coach, table personnel, or an irate fan or parent). All points shall, might, may, will be erased (no matter how much time has elapsed and how many points are scored). Television monitors and private camcorders are allowed to be used to review the situation. T/F - If an official misses counting six players on the court and allows play to continue, he/she is subject to public scorn and ridicule. |
