Same here in SC. I had one canceled last year because it appeared it was going to snow and the visitors canceled school for the day.

I just avoided the grocery store until the next day when it was 65 and sunny...

Mark, as a rule I make it a policy not to argue with you, but in this case, I"m about 10 miles away, and you're iced in, so I think I'll take the chance. Really, the cancellations today and tomorrow aren't for snow. Portland can function through an inch or two of snow. It's the ice on the roads that makes people nervous. And we've got even more snow coming in tonight on top of the ice. I hate driving on this stuff, and I"m always glad when they cancel things.

So I guess you'll never visit Canada in the wintertime?

Tournament this weekend where we had teams that had to travel some distance to get home leave early and the games were cancelled. Why you ask, well as it turns out the first blizzard of the year was occurring and the temperatures dropped to -45 celcius. I would not want to break down and get caught in those conditions.

For those of you who don't speak metric -45C = -49F

I love football. I don't officiate it, but it is my favorite sport. However, it wasn't this past Friday. A local school here made it to the state finals and they played on Friday. I had that schools varsity games, also playing on Friday. The coach canceled the games (girls and boys varsity) so the players could go see the football game! On a positive note, they won!

We would have to cancel the basketball game because several of our basketball players play football.

On the other hand, our football team was 1-10 so there was NO chance of that happening!

Juulie, as a rule I make it a policy not to argue with you, but in this case, I will. The email I received regarding the cancellation of the games stated it was because of snow.

I remember living in the Portland area, the snow and ice storms can be terrible but thankfully not long lived. Having lived in AK, driving in snow and ice wasn't that big of a deal. I was the only one that made it to work on-time during one storm there and ended up driving to pick up co-workers.

No worries about canceling games up here. Only cancelled one day of school in 30 years of school. Blowing 60 with 0 visibility and 30 foot snow drifts. Of course after administration cancelled school it got nice.

Hey, I just realized that you are from Shishmaref! How goes the winter? I grew up on the Kenai Peninsula, and my dad worked for the FAA so he had to fly all over the state checking runways and emergency equipment. He would take my brother and I with him in the summers. So I've been to Shishmaref a couple of times - many years ago. Did they ever move the town, or is that still in the works?

Is that the user name for someone who officiates the game of shishma?

Actually, the email came from his assistant, Nick, who calls himself "The Big Kahuna". It gets old after a while, but I don't tease him about is because he's a deputy sheriff.
