But consider the rule the official kicked, and then consider the possibility that the bench placement rule may have been kicked. :)

You're correct, they were on the wrong bench, as it were. My observation is that most times, they set up correctly, but I have heard coaches stake a claim to a particular bench because "this is where we always sit".

I agree. The burden is on the team throwing it away. Unless someone on the bench obviously and intentionally grabs the ball away from a player who is about to recover it, I've got nothing on this play (well, it's an OOB violation, but nothing else).

How the benches are determined shouldn't matter, since in the first half the court in front of your bench is your backcourt, and in the second half it's your frontcourt.
