Jump Ball?

A1 takes the ball out of bounds for a throw in ... A1 holds ball over the OOB line where B1 grabs the ball and A1 and B1 now both have possesion of the ball ... Is a jump ball is the correct call?

Terrapins Fan Fri Dec 05, 2008 02:08pm

Yes, provided it wasn't OOB because of an A-P.

What difference does that make in the call?

Correct call, "Held" Ball.

If It was from an A-P, the team taking it out would still keep it!

Throw-in hasn't ended and no violation occurred so the arrow doesn't change (4-42-5; Casebook 6.4.5 Situation B).

I agree with all of this. But in the case of an AP throwin, could it just continue forever?

Usually only for 5 seconds.... but yes, theoretically.

In summary ... if team A was awarded the ball because of a held ball situation and the arrow in their favor, and we had this situation on the throw in Team A would then get the ball back for another throw in?

When is the arrow reset?

Scratch85 Fri Dec 05, 2008 03:01pm

Yes. Because the AP is still in their direction.

Back In The Saddle Fri Dec 05, 2008 04:18pm

Yep, and a held ball is not a violation. Despite what the "Rules By Topic" book says. ;)

When the throw in is completed or the team with the arrow violates.

The throw is in completed when the ball is legally touched by a player in bounds or a player out of bounds.

7.6.4.f ...

7.6.4 SITUATION F: Thrower A1 inadvertently holds the ball through the endline plane during a throw-in. B1 is able to get his/her hands on the ball and A1 cannot pull it back. RULING: There is no player or team control during a throw in, therefore a held ball is called, resulting in an alternating-possession throw-in. If the original throw-in is an alternating-possession throw-in, Team A still has the arrow following the held ball.

Back In The Saddle Sat Dec 06, 2008 09:19pm

What does player or team control have to do with this situation?

Great question, BITS. They have the right ruling but the wrong reasoning. Or at least they have irrelevant and misleading reasoning.
