Jump Ball?
A1 takes the ball out of bounds for a throw in ... A1 holds ball over the OOB line where B1 grabs the ball and A1 and B1 now both have possesion of the ball ... Is a jump ball is the correct call?
|
Yes, provided it wasn't OOB because of an A-P.

Correct call, "Held" Ball.
If It was from an A-P, the team taking it out would still keep it! |
Throw-in hasn't ended and no violation occurred so the arrow doesn't change (4-42-5; Casebook 6.4.5 Situation B).
|
I agree with all of this. But in the case of an AP throwin, could it just continue forever?

In summary ... if team A was awarded the ball because of a held ball situation and the arrow in their favor, and we had this situation on the throw in Team A would then get the ball back for another throw in?

Yes. Because the AP is still in their direction.
|
Yep, and a held ball is not a violation. Despite what the "Rules By Topic" book says. ;)

The throw is in completed when the ball is legally touched by a player in bounds or a player out of bounds. |
7.6.4.f ...
7.6.4 SITUATION F: Thrower A1 inadvertently holds the ball through the endline plane during a throw-in. B1 is able to get his/her hands on the ball and A1 cannot pull it back. RULING: There is no player or team control during a throw in, therefore a held ball is called, resulting in an alternating-possession throw-in. If the original throw-in is an alternating-possession throw-in, Team A still has the arrow following the held ball.

What does player or team control have to do with this situation?
