No Pivot?

What situation does not allow you to have a pivot foot after a jump stop?

Mark Padgett Tue Nov 25, 2008 11:36am

If you fall. ;)

Back In The Saddle Tue Nov 25, 2008 12:03pm

A player, who catches the ball while moving or dribbling, may stop, and establish a pivot foot as follows:
a. If both feet are off the floor and the player lands:
1. Simultaneously on both feet, either foot may be the pivot.
2. On one foot followed by the other, the first foot to touch is the pivot.
3. On one foot, the player may jump off that foot and simultaneously land on both. Neither foot can be a pivot in this case.
b. If one foot is on the floor:
1. It is the pivot when the other foot touches in a step.
2. The player may jump off that foot and simultaneously land on both. Neither foot can be a pivot in this case.

rockyroad Tue Nov 25, 2008 12:11pm

A2 catches a pass with one foot on the floor, hops, and lands on both feet simultaneously (aka jump stop). A2 cannot move either foot - thus having no pivot foot.

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

OK, I'm missing something, I thought Rocky had it right?

Unless you're taking it as he didn't mean exactly what/how he typed. Obviously A2 can still attempt a jump shot.

Phbbbbbbttttttt...A2 can jump to pass or shoot, but we all know that doesn't really count as "moving" either foot. Scrappy is just being a turkey since it's so close to Thanksgiving...go Dodgers!! :D

Or set the ball down and wipe his hands on his socks?

He can also lift only one pivot foot, like a step through, as long as it doesn't hit the floor before he passes or shoots.

I saw many a jump shots without moving feet in the varsity girls scrimmage I worked last night.

Sigh...:(

I'm too new here to know when you guys are joking, but you don't need a pivot to shoot or pass.....you DO need one to start a dribble....therefore (ergo), after a jump stop and no pivot available, your only two GOOD recourses are to shoot or pass, even if you have to jump (thereby moving your feet)...but definitely, no dribble....

At work? I would hope not. I know at my job, at least, there are rules against that sort of thing.

Unless, of course, they have set up a room for you to do it in private.

Office doors were a wonderful invention.

Ooopppsss...agreed....you just need to dribble before you lift it....that's what I meant, even though I didn't write it....good catch....

The problem with office doors is that they are connected to offices...which were NOT a wonderful invention as a place to do work. :(

Maybe, but they beat the hell out of cubicles.

Welpe Tue Nov 25, 2008 03:45pm

True...but I hate them both.

Went from office with a door to shared office without so much as a desk to a cubicle, as of this morning.

Sort of like the difference between living by yourself in an apartment, sleeping in open-bay barracks, or having a roommate in a hotel.

So, what do you not hate?

Johnny Ringo Tue Nov 25, 2008 04:09pm

Has anyone ever even seen a play like this? Rarely happens ...

Actually quite often. Happens in many (if not most) of my games. Just have to be aware of it...many officials will call it a travel because it can, at times, "look funny."

Especially when it happens around the three point line.

Can anyone give me an example?

Think of your jump shooter catching a pass about 15 feet away from the basket, catches it on the move on one foot, and jumps off the foot landing on two feet before going back up for a jump shot.

It's really cool when a kid does it wrong on one end, you call the travel, and his opponent does it perfectly for a three point shot on the other end. Coaches love that.

OK ... not seeing that or it happening very often.

What about the dribbler ending his/her dribbleafter leaping into the air and junp stopping. They can pivot from there, or not?

Depends.

Jump, catch, land on one foot, jump, land on two feet: no pivot allowed.

Jump, catch, land on two feet. pivot allowed.

I've seen it multiple times in a single game. I had the situation I mentioned, too; home coach hated that.
