Mark Padgett Wed May 22, 2002 03:24pm

I just opened up my mail and it contained my summer league (one of the two I work) schedule and I see that I have three games scheduled with Juulie on May 31! This is a HS girls league. We play 16 minute stop time halves with the normal number of timeouts. Three of these in a row on a full sized court is real work.

If any of you are interested, I will be glad to tape the games and then offer them for sale on ebay. After all, Juulie probably will be wearing shorts! Of course, so will I, so that will bring the bidding way down. :p

BTW - the info packet says we should wear our patch. Gee - I've never officiated in my pirate costume before.

Also BTW - the following week, Juulie has games scheduled with the "Original Dave." Hope he says something funny. ;)

ChuckElias Wed May 22, 2002 03:39pm

I bid $6 (cost of tape plus postage). :D

BktBallRef Wed May 22, 2002 06:16pm

I bid $5! :D

ChuckElias Wed May 22, 2002 06:23pm

LMAO, Tony!! That's very funny. Good one :)

Chuck

BktBallRef Wed May 22, 2002 10:19pm

I'd bid more if it were just Juulie, without Padgett! :p

Mark Dexter Wed May 22, 2002 11:12pm

All I can say is:

BREAK OUT THE MEDS!!!

Of course, I don't know if they'll be needed to keep Padgett under control or to help Juulie not go insane!!

If that were the case, I'd be advertising the tape in chat rooms. ;)

BTW - I can't wait to see her face the first time I call "icing".

Don't worry, Dexter, I'm already on anti-depressants, so I'll get through it somehow!

I suppose if Padgett is selling tapes, I'd better shave my legs that day...

And - all the proceeds can go to a "Rasheed Wallace Anger Management" scholarship for NBA wannabees. :p

Camron Rust Thu May 23, 2002 12:47pm

I'm confused, is the price how much Mark will pay is to take the tape???

I'll only take it for $20. If Mark and be edited out digitally I might even pay for it. ;)

rockyroad Thu May 23, 2002 01:14pm

Are these tapes gonna have sound? Will Mark and Juulie be wired or miked?? I would love to hear their time-out conversations??? The price would certainly go up...

Will Mark wear his striped bicycle shorts? Will they have shirts with "Babe-a-Licious" and "Hunk-a-Licious" on the back? Which one will wear which shirt? Whose call gets preference if their meds kick in at the same time?

Inquiring minds need to know!:D

Mark Padgett Thu May 23, 2002 03:57pm

HOLY COWPIE! What have I started? I guess Juulie and I will have to set some ground rules.

BTW - she emailed me and pointed out that there are some other dates in which we are working at the same facility at the same time but in different gyms. Usually, in this league, they don't care if you switch partners on site (just for basketball - so get your minds out of the gutter ), so we'll probably get to work a few more games together.

Actually, I was just kidding about the tape. If Juulie wants to bring her equipment (VIDEO equipment - get your minds out of the gutter ) and tape for eval purposes, that's fine with me.

Also BTW - I only shave my legs for J. Edgar Hoover - and he's dead (OK, you can have your minds in the gutter for this one ). :p

When we get to the gym and have our pregame (MEETING - get your minds back out of the gutter ), I'll remind her of my two rules:

1) I am always right, except if my wife is within earshot.
2) When in doubt, see rule number 1.

Really folks - Juulie and I have officiated together in the past and it's always been a lot of fun. I've worked with close to 1000 partners in my career and I don't know of any that are as dedicated to being the best referee possible as she is. She works hard, always is trying to get better and respects her partner. That rates an "A" in my book.

And Juulie - don't forget to bring the Diet Snapple. I like the peach iced tea. Thanks.

Doug Thu May 23, 2002 04:38pm

Hey Mark, what's up w/ your meatloaf signature? I always thought it was ... then make lemonade, is there a story???:)

I guess you've never been to Portland. It's the land of Birkenstocks and Starbucks. It's the only place in the USA where granola is sold only through state controlled stores.

I have to go now and take my SUV to counselling.

As to my signature, there's no story there. I just thought it sounded funny.

You know, kind of like the joke - "Why don't cannibals eat clowns? They taste funny."

rockyroad Fri May 24, 2002 11:26am

Mark is correct...we from across the river here will - on occasion - drive into Portland just to get a taste of the "yuppy" life...they will come over here to see what "normal" life is like...and he is also correct about Juulie being very dedicated and hard-working...

I guess it's "normal" to have a sales tax. ;)

rockyroad Fri May 24, 2002 02:06pm

Beats the hell out of a State income tax!!! :)

ChuckElias Fri May 24, 2002 02:42pm

Here in Taxachusetts, we have both :( 5% sales tax, 3.25%-5.25% income tax (more on certain investment income).

Which, I may remind you, people on your side of the river who work on my side of the river have to pay.

But - we don't have to pay your sales tax with our free exemption cards.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :)

CT, too (although higher rates, I believe).

Chuck, let's just move to New Hampshire!

Okay, I've spent three years being dedicated and hard-working. Are you gonna be at camp next weekend so I can move up to "competent" or at least "adequate"?

rockyroad Sat May 25, 2002 11:12am

Oops...and competent and more than adequate...and doesn't have to pay WA sales tax...you win Padgett...should have known better that to argue with a Portlander about taxes!!

Technically, I'm not a "Portlander" since I live in the suburbs. In fact, around here, we refer to that city as "The People's Republic of Portland". I think it's a reference to the extreme liberalism that exists there.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not some right-wing nut. In fact, I'm a registered Democrat. However, I'm very moderate and vote for and support other moderates regardless of party.

Now, if you want really liberal, try Eugene (not Eugene Levy - the city of Eugene, Oregon - although Eugene Levy seems pretty liberal to me also :) )

Don't forget, though, that Evergreen College is not in Oregon, but WA....

OK, Juulie. I give up. I have no clue as to the meaning of this reference. Is Evergreen supposed to have a reputation as a liberal college? Is it a "liberal arts" college and this was a hidden pun?

Surely, only UC Berkeley can challenge the U of Oregon for the "Most Liberal University" trophy.

Juulie - you got some 'splainin to do.

See you Friday on the court. Please bring your whistle. Thanks.

Hey, no problem. I've done several games now where I didn't share the whistle, and it worked out pretty well. Thanks for letting me know ahead of time that this is how you prefer to work.

Regarding, Evergreen College, I can't believe that you've never heard of it. It is (or was at one time) a very liberal college with a lot of experimenting (educational and otherwise) in its past. I'm not sure where it is in Washington, but I'm thinking Olympia? Tacoma? They were one of the colleges in the '60s and '70s that tried "open classrooms" and "flexible schedules" and no grades, and other radical ideas. People would go there if they wanted to major in Philosophy of Basketweaving and Paradigm Psychology and stuff like that. Lots of artists. Lots of hippies (this was back in the dinosaur era...). And a very hip reputation.

I'm pretty sure it's still in operation, although I haven't been wrong yet this month, so I suppose it might be about time... Josh must run in the wrong circles if none of his friends went there.

Actually, Josh's friends are pretty well scattered at U of O, OSU and, for some reason, Pepperdine.

However, just the other day, he ran into a kid he went to HS with who was one of those kids who always bragged about how he was going to attend some Ivy League school, then breeze through med school and then become some fabulously wealthy brain surgeon. You know the type - incredibly arrogant and condescending.

The kid is working at a Jiffy Lube.

Anyway, this Friday, I'm wearing shorts and I am not, repeat not, shaving my legs. :p

Technically, it is called The Evergreen State College and is (I think) a UW spin-off. My older son graduated from there in 1997 with a degree in Environmental Science and he works for the National Fisheries part of NOAA. Chris is very smart (takes after his mom), but has some very strange ways of looking at life in general. He loved the school because of the open class rooms and no set structure. He signed a "contract" with his advisor where they mutually agreed on what he would take for a quarter (16 hours) and he could either come to class or not -- his choice. He was required to turn in certain material at certain points during the quarter. At the end of the "contract" period, he and his advisor would go over what he accomplished, and if my son deviated from the "agreed to" course work, he may or may not receive credit for part, or possibly none, of the crdits. Weird! First time I visited the campus, I thought I had stepped back into the 60's -- tie dyed T-shirts, long hair, sandals, and non-shaved legs (women :D). Looked like a Grateful Dead concert.

Tim Roden Tue May 28, 2002 09:47am

In Colorado we have 5% Income Tax and 3% sales tax. Of course every county and municpality adds to the sales tax so that the best of the cities, Colorado Springs has 6.1% and the worst Boulder is 8.5%. These numbers could be out of date since I didn't keep up with the election issues last year. All the voters have to do is vote and they have more taxes.
