I don't know how our assigner gets such a good contract? We do officiate these games, with the exception of switching on every foul, like we officiate our high school games. I've never had a partner not show up. And almost all of us are high school varsity officials.

These schools all charge admission, all have very busy refreshment stands, and there's usually a 50/50 raffle at every game.

Does any other Forum member get such great fees for "youth" level games?

I'm not sure which is the best part: the fees, the organization, or rec partners who not only show up but actually officiate like they're supposed to. And no, in 3 states, I've never had the good fortune to work any rec league that remotely approaches yours or Mark's.

I told him I'd been doing this for 17 years and that's how it was always done. He asked if he could have an advantage by drafting out of turn because "he didn't know the kids as well as some of the other coaches" (all the kids display their skills in front of the coaches, including him, on an "eval night") and wanted to know if he could not have to take any girls on his team because he "didn't know this level was going to be co-ed" even though we discussed it with every JV coach including him at least three times (our "experiment" this year is that each team has one or two girls on it because that's how the registration numbers came out). He criticized our entire Board and made snide comments during the whole evening. He was just a jerk.

When we were done, one of the other Board members came up to me and asked me about this guy, because apparently he was the same way last year. All I said was, "I'll make sure I get scheduled to work all his games."

I heard a suggestion for drafting teams that might interest you and might eliminate some of the problems.

Have the managers all help draft the teams. After the teams are drafted, number them and put the numbers in a hat. Have each manager pull a number and that is his team.

Helps them all work to making the talent even.

I'm afraid that wouldn't work. Coaches draft kids onto their teams for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it's because the kid is good, sometimes it's because the kid is a friend of their kid or maybe the coach is friends with the kid's parents, sometimes it's because they've had that kid on their team before and that kid knows their plays and the coach knows the kid has a good attitude, sometimes it's because the kid's mom is a real babe.

We just had our annual meeting today. We service 13 schools, that field 83 different teams, boys, and girls, at three different levels. Our assigner tried to sign a contract with a few schools in another deanery, but they balked at our fees. I can understand that, but they don't know what they're missing. We added a new deanery to our contract this past year. Every coach, and athletic director, in that deanery gave us 100% positive feedback, well officiated games, officials on time, dressed professionally, consistent "wiggle room" with the younger players, fewer technical fouls, etc. They thought that they made the right decision, and that you get what you pay for.

The Catholic Church grants bishops the possibility of joining together several neighboring parishes into special federations, usually called deaneries.

A bird, actually a Shady Brook Farms Frozen Turkey, down the street, at my local Stop and Shop, is worth 69¢ a pound.

The youth travel leagues I work pay $40/game. Most games are Sunday. I usually do three games: $120 in cash, paid at the gym by the visiting coach. HS rules and time limits, with most games done in about 1:10.
