Altercation

A6, A7, and A8 come onto the floor during an altercation. Is the coach charged with one indirect technical foul or three? The three players were bench personnel.

It depends.

Do they come off the bench to fight?

Do they come off the bench and help break up the fight?

There is a difference in how the coach is assessed Technical Fouls.

Rule 10-4-5.

the head coach is assessed a maximum of one indirect technical foul. if they do not participate.
The head coach is assessed one indirect technical foul for each bench player participating in the fight.

So if a fight breaks out on the court and players come over the court to break up the fight, are they considered to be involved in the fight?

I don't believe that the rule book differentiates whether a player is trying to break up the fight or not. My reason is that if a coach comes onto the court unbeckoned and breaks up the fight, he is charged with a flagrant foul. (Please note that in 99.999999% of the cases he is beckoned in my opinion "automatically" ;) ). I sure don't think the rule book gives a player the option of breaking up a fight without being beckoned (which I would 100% never beckon a player to do)

Just a thought

If at least two fight, coach is done.
One total for all who leave the bench but don't fight.
One each for all who leave the bench and fight.

If players come off to "break up" the fight, they still get charged.

Coaches may get some leeway, but it had better be obvious they had good intentions.

We've been told by our local interpreter that if the coach is helping to break up the fight, then he has been beckoned, even if we didn't beckon him. Same thing with serious injuries.

Agreed, but he only gets to break up his side. If he touches a player from the other team, even to pull him away, we have problems.

I absolutely agree. The coach can use common sense. However, players better be pulling up the chair and some popcorn.

Isn't that what happened in the WNBA this past summer, involving assistant coach Rick Mahorn ?
