Final weekend of boys varsity spring league. We get ready to start one game and one team has no coach. My partner tells them they must have someone on the bench who is at least 18. They go over to the bleachers and someone's mom says she will do it. She looks about 40.
As she gets near the bench, I stop her and tell her that she can't do it because she has to be at least 18. She looks at me and says, "That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me in 10 years." I reply, "You mean, since you were 7?" She looks at me again and says, "God bless you." She then sat down on the bench. Actually, she did pretty well - never said a word to us and applauded her team when they made a nice play. She was the best "coach" we had all day. In the next game, there was a scuffle resulting in free throws for A1. He kept talking to B1 as the players lined up. I told him to knock it off. He said, "OK, sorry. I'm good." His teammate A2, who was on the lane said to him, "That's not what your girlfriend told me." Even A1 cracked up. It diffused what may have turned into a bad situation. Well, gotta get my rest now - girls games tomorrow. ![]()
