Did you issue a T to the coach because his players dunked in warm-ups? How is it one more and and the coach is done? Or did you T the coach for grinning while telling his kids not to dunk. You lost me with this one.

Coach,if a player dunks,or attempts to dunk,in the warmup,he is charged with a T and the head coach is also charged with an indirect T.Three dunks->3 indirect T's on the coach-> bye-bye,coach!That's R10-3-5Penalty in the book.

Dunking during a dead ball is a technical foul on the person who dunks it. Since before the game starts all team members are considered bench personnel, the technical is also charged indirectly to the head coach. Two kids dunked, that's 2 indirect T's on the coach. One more indirect (or direct, for that matter) and the coach is ejected.

I don't mean this to be demeaning but when you gain more experience, you'll understand these situations better. I don't feel good or bad about giving a T, anymore than I feel good or bad about calling a foul or violation. it's simply part of the jo and has to be approached that way. As you gain experience, you'll be less affected by by such things.

High school coaches and kids are held to certain standards, some of which are stricter depending on what state you're in. In most states, an ejection will also get you suspended for a game or two. We have less trouble from HS players and coaches than we do in other levels of basketball.

Rec leagues are completely different. In some of these, you're back by the league administrators and in otheres, you aren't. You pretty much have to take care of business or you'll have people waiting for you in the parking lot.

AAU is different still. "Weekend warriors" is an accurate term. most of the players are pretty good but their parents and coaches think they're superstars! Such is not the case. That's why most officials who work AAU ball have a zero tolerance mentality. That does not mean that we enjoy giving T's or that we do not warn prior to giving them. As I've stated before, you can't ALWAYS avoid giving a T. And, yes, I am speaking in terms of unsportsmanlike conduct. Sometimes the actions demand one, other times the coach wants one, and still other times the coach is testing you to see what you're made of.

Each of us have our own limits. You have to decide what yours are.

I agree... sometimes the actions DO demand a T. In those cases, I dont hesitate. And to be honest, some coaches just make me sick, and I do not feel bad for T-ing them up. For instance, there is this one coach, and its obvious that he is trying to live out his dreams through his players. I had the opportunity to see him play, and I noticed that he had to wear a knee brace. Right then, I knew who he was... the kid that just couldnt make it. And personally, I dont mind giving him a T at all. I hope that doesnt sound to mean, but its my truth for the day.

I really didn't get the correlation between wearing a knee brace and being a wannabee, also.
Then again,Dan and I are hardly the brightest laserlight shows around.

Good point! I'll have to remember to use that!
Easy there, big fella!! I didn't actually say that to anybody. I was just stating my own feelings to the board here. But I don't think I could bring myself to actually use that line in a game. So, maybe I should put a standard disclaimer on my last post. "Sarcastic cracks not for use in game situations." Something like that.

Chuck
I have used variations of this comment (except for the "stupid" part), and it can be extremely effective.

Talking

Yes, it may sound bad.

But, my point is this... there are some coaches, that make me cringe from the get-go. And I am not gonna put up with any of their stuff. There are also some coaches who I get a really good feeling from that I will warn before 'whamming'. I am sure you all feel that way, how many will admit it. haha.
Anyway, that was my truth for yesterday, today I am on to something else.

Thumbs up

OH... and about the knee brace: When this man is coaching or something, he is all EGO. See? And then when I saw him, hobbling down the court, I knew that he was all talk. Do you get that? If not, then you will just have to trust me on this one, and we will move on. haha

There are definitely coaches that I like and coaches that I absolutely can't stand. The problem is that you HAVE to treat both species exactly the same, whether you want to or not.If you're gonna warn one before you T him up,you had better warn the other one too.Your further actions then depend on how they respond to your warning. If you do it any different,then--as my 3yr. old grand-daughter says-"not fair".
