Thumbs up

I know this isn't the baseball board, but the new issue of TV Guide has a story praising former Phillie announcer Richie Ashburn. It relates the following story:

On opening day 1986, he interviewed Phils manager John Felske and asked whether his managing style would change. Felske said that he'd challenge umpire decisions more aggressively. Ashburn paused. Then, in the ultimate follow-up, he asked, "Well, then, who's gonna manage after you're throw out?"

An absolute classic.

Kind of reminds me of the time I was working with Dave and, after he tossed the coach, the assistant (who already had a technical) said "Why don't you go ahead and toss me too? Then there'll be no one to coach these kids." Dave replied, "I would, but then that would give your kids too much of an advantage."

Seeing this post was from MP, was anyone else expecting to see a blank page?

No it was quite sad because it reminds some of us that the heroes of our youth are starting to pass on to the Field of Dreams. How long before we go?

I assume you're referring to former all-star Richie Ashburn. This was a guy who played all out, every minute he was on the field. He's also the answer to a baseball trivia question. Richie was the first player ever drafted by the Mets in the expansion draft. That year, the Mets drafted a lot of players who were at the end of their careers, but still had a lot of "drawing power" due to their names.

However, as good a center fielder as Ashburn was, the best all around player at any field position I ever saw was Willie Mays.

OK, enough baseball. It must be the season for it.

I was saving that for my "For a change, here's a brilliant coach comment" post.
